Pilots Ask Promotion By Timtrrl Prftn WASHINGTON, Jan. 7,-Con-gress will be asked this session to compensate army fliers for the great risks of their service by placing them on a promotion list separate from the rest of the army. This for years has been the desire of air corps pilots. Two years ago their wish was almost fulfilled when the Furlow bill went part way through congress, but died before becoming law. This time, Representative W. Frank James, one of the best-in-formed men in congress on the needs of the air corps, is leading the fight for the pilots. Devise Aerial Light f'.y Sr inter. Km irr. WASHINGTON, Jan. 7.—A red and green flash beacon for the "traffic cop”of the airport has been designed by the aeronautics branch of the United States department of commerce and is now being tested to determine how it may be used to best advantage. The beacon is in reality a lightweight, powerful searchlight, so small that it can be held conveniently in one hand. Instead of throwing a beam of white light, green and red signals can be accurately aimed at aircraft about to take off or approaching the field for a. landing. On a clear day with the sun shining both red and green signals can be seen from a distance of six or eight miles. In fact, if a distant plane is visible to the airport operator, he may be sure that his signal will be seen by the pilot.
