BY BEN STERN TP it is domination of the state’s highway construction program 1 which the Governor’s social lobby is attempting, then evidently it has achieved more success -than did f D. C. Stephenson when he at- | tempted to put through the iniqui- i tous “ripper bill.” [ When Governor Leslie tetqrned i from his last fishing trip with Dolly ; Gray, manager of the American ’ Aggregates Company, and Fred , Cunningham, highway contractor,, he had a list of seven men sched- ; uled for dismissal. Three had been under fire for some time, so there was no opposition from the highway commission members when Omer Manlove, head of the garage; Owen Bolling, secretary and aid to the director, and Russell Gardner, purchasing agent, were dismissed. But there was opposition when pressure was put against P. D. Miesenhelder, laboratory chief; Earl B. Lockridge. district engineer .at La Porte; A. O. Hastings, distriot engineer at Greenfield, and Russell Bnsart, aid to Maintenance Engineer Hinkle. Despite, efforts of Gray and his friends the four are still on the pay roll. tt n u Lockridge is the engineer in the district where the Logansport plant of the American Aggregates Company is located. It. is said that he favors crushed stone over aggregates as a road component which hits Dolly in the pocketbook. It is also reported that on several occasions he has crossed Gray’s path regarding specifications Hastings’ district includes Indianapolis and Richmond, where the other two plants of the company are located. An avowed black top paving ad'C-ate, his activities naturally would be disliked by Gray. Miesenhelder’s record for efficiency as laboratory chief is such that Commissioners Arthur Sapp and Robert Boren immediately came to his aid. The reports are that Miesenhelder would grant no favors to G’-ay or his company. a a tr They also say that an attempt was made to have Miesenhelder include in the specifications stipulations that gravel pits in operation less than one year shall be barred from bidding. This would take out of the picture the gravel pits put in operation along proposed road routes, whose prices for the aggregates are often less than those of the old companies. Miesenhelder refused to accede to Despondent, Bullets End Life Self-inflicted bullet wounds proved fatal to Jake Huter. 56. of 2157 Ashland avenue, who shot himself twice in the head at his home early today. He died at city hospital. Mrs. Anna Wood, a sister of Huter, with whom he lived, said her brother had been despondent several days.

this demand, it is said, so he was i marked for the ax.
