ROAD PATROL GOES OFF DUTY Council Cuts Budget for Sheriff’s Office. Seventeen members of the sheriffs office, including the county road patrol, went off the pay roll this morning as a result of the slashing of Sheriff Charles Sumner’s budget by the county council. Approximately $32,000, which pays for the patrol, was cut off of the sheriff's appropriations, leaving approximately 200 miles of county roads without policing. The road patrol was started in 1927 and has met with little criticism. Although a night force will be kept on duty at the jail to act in a double capacity as jailers and to receive reports on violations by phone, the sheriff will be without an adequate number of deputies to answer all calls, it was learned today. Majority of the deputies are needed for serving of legal papers and executions. Sumner declared that he intended to attempt to keep two squads

on hand for emergency calls, but will be unable to furnish patrol duty over outlying roads. “I fear greatly an outbreak of law violations, which will include robberies, burglaries and house-break-ing, because of my curtailed force,” Sumner said. "In addition, it will permit bootleggers and gamblers to operate almost without restraint. ‘‘We shall, of course, to the best of our ability, answer and investigate all complaints.”
DOOM FERTILIZER PLANT Sanitary Board Votes to Abolish Dehydration by City. Abolition of the dehydration plant was ordered today by the sanitary board when members of the board predicted $47,000 would be lost in its operation during 1932. Eighteen plant employes will be given posts in other divisions of the department. Board members said fertilizer which cost $20 a ton to manufacture could be sold for only $15 a ton. HOME BUILDERS ARE OPTIMISTIC Association President Sees Banner Year in Prospect. Prediction that 1932 will be a banner year for construction of modern homes, in view of the many improvements made in home building and reduced costs, was made today by J. Harry Miles, Indianapolis Home Builders’ Association president. While 1931 has not produced much building, it has served as a laboratory for the building industry, Miles added. "With all the new devices brought out by manufacturers, together with the low price of building materials, it is not difficult to see why we look to 1932 as a good building year,” Miles commented. "We are starting the new year by laying the comer stone of our 1932 model home, 5240 Cornelius avenue, in connection with the 1932 Home Complete Exposition, April 2-10. We believe the home exemplifies all those things pertinent to the new era of building.”
