Indianapolis Times Wishes Merry Christmas to Want Ad Readers

SANTA CLAUS HAS RIVALS IN ‘FATHERLAND’ Quaint Yuletide Customs Prevail in Sections of Germany. BY H. A. PETERS United Press Staff Correspondent BERLIN, Dec. 25. —Germany, the home of Santa Claus and the Christmas tree, also has a variety of other observances of the season, which are little known, but none the less picturesque. Although in the larger cities, the how orthodox symbols of Christmas —the tree and the “Christmas man" (St. Nicholas)— are the general rule, several sections still cling to observances which, in some cases, antedate St. Nicholas. In southern Bavaria, and the country bordering Austria, the children do not watch for the ‘‘Christkind," or Christ Child, who is the bearer of gifts in so many other parts of Germany. The tree also is absent. But the children leave their plates (the stocking is not a German custom) outside their windows or doors, and they are filled with gifts by the "Golden Horse.” Hoofs Announce Arrival No one has even seen the “Golden Horse," nor can any one explain how he can carry enough gifts for every one, but he continues to come to many homes and announce that the presents are there by a stamping and a currying of hoofs. The “Golden Horse’’ is also a patron of Westphalia and parts of the Rhineland, where, however, he ■is only the charger upoa which the “Christkind" rides. In some sections, Christmas celebrations begin earlier. In Swabia, the children, at dusk on Dec. 12, assemble in large groups, going from house to house singing carols and demanding sweets. The custom of using, instead of a tree, the Christ Child's manger, with the table scene carved from wood depicting Mary, Joseph, the three wise men, the shepherds and angels, is still observed in some parte of Swabia and is gradually being revived. Good Children Listed Another South German custom is the fight over the Christmas tree, when the "bogey man” somehow slips into the house and attempts to carry it off. In the Palatinate and upper Rhine, the Christmas child is very efficient and jealous. He is to be seen making the rounds before Christmas eve, clad in white. He makes a splendid figure, with a golden book in which he notes the names of all good children. He also carries a black book for the naughty ones. In the cities, shop closed today at. 4 p. m., and by 6 the streets were deserted. Even the little stands and kiosks, which for the last three weeks have stood on busy corners offering toys and Chirstmas cookies in fantastic shapes, disappeared and every one went home.
