$30,000 WILLED INSTITUTIONS BY STERLING HOLT Hospitals and Homes Share $300,000 Estate With Kin and Employes. Bequests to Indianapolis hospitals and charitable institutions totaling *30,000 ase provided under the will of Sterling R. Holt, Democratic leader and philanthropist, filed today in probate court. Numerous relatives, employes and business associates share in the estate valued at *300,000. Holt, who served as city controller in the administrations of Mayor Reginald H. Sullivan and former Mayor L. Ert Slack, died Saturday at his home, 3525 North Pennsylvania street, after a long illness. Largest single bequest of $15,000 was given to the James Whitcomb Riley Memorial Association The will stipulated the sum is to be given in addition to donations already given, totaling $5,000. Associate Given $20,000 The Methodist hospital and the Deaconess home jointly are to receive $5,000, and the Indianapolis Home for Aged Women, $5,000. St. Vincent’s hospital was given $5,000. A $5,000 bequest was given Hammer Memorial academy at Snow Camp, N. C. Walter S. Ballenger, for thirtyfive years an associate with Holt in the Holt Ice and Storage Company, was given a gold watch, $7,600 in cash and stocks worth $12,400. Bessie Miller, Negro, maid at the Holt home for twenty-seven years, was bequeathed $7,000 in cash and *8,500 In personal property. John Daugherty. Holt’s chauffeur, was bequeathed $3,000, and fifteen distant relatives were given amounts ranging from SIOO to $2,000. Wife’* Kin Beneficiaries Six relatives of Holt’s deceased wife were given bequests as follows: Gertrude Holt Bairn, $2,000; Mamie Prill, $2,000; Louise Bairn, $1,000; Maxine Curtis, $1,000; Harry Curtie, $2,000 and Mabel Hill, $2,000. Blanche Depree, a daughter of Holt’s brother, Todd H. Holt, was bequeathed $2,000. Under the will, Ballenger was bequeathed a split-second gold watch, and Verl Holt, daughter of Edwin Holt, Holt's half-brother, was given a hall clock with wooden wheels, a family heirloom. Two “certain chairs” were given to Letitia Hicks. Several distant relatives will share in the residue of the. estate. The will stipulated that, William and Clyde Holt, nephews, are to receive not more than SIOO. CHRISTMAS GASOLINE LEADS TO JAIL CELL Youth Bought Gift for Father With Bad Check. B'j Time * Special COLUMBUS, Ind., Dec. 23.—Robert O’Neal, 18, an Indianapolis salesman, is in the Bartholomew county jail here facing a charge of issuing fraudulent checks. The youth stopped at a filling station here and gave a check for sl6 in payment lor five gallons of gasoline which he said he was going to give to his father for a Christmas present. Reign Julian, manager at the station suspected the youth and went to a nearby business house to obtain change. While at the place, he notified police and O’Neal was placed under arrest. The check was drawn on the Irwin Union Trust Company here and signed James Soders. In the youth's possession were two other checks, each for $16.50, signed with the same name and drawn on the same bank.

St. Nick Swims Tropical Postmen Brave Shark Infested Waters With Yule Mail.

By United J‘rrss NIA-FU, Tonga Islands. Dec. 23.—Christmas mail is being delivered to this tiny South Sea island by swimming postmen, probably the only letter-carriers of this sort in the world. So encircled is the island by coral reefs and treacherous currents that steamers can not approach. Native postmen, therefore, swim out to meet the boats, stroking through two miles of shark-in-vested waters to deliver and collect the mail. On the way out the foremost swimmer carries a short stick to which the bundle of letters is tied. This is dropped into a bucket lowered over the side of the ship. The incoming mail then is dropped overboard, sealed in a large biscuit tin. The swimming postmen, deftly pushing it before them, start back toward shore. Undaunted by wind, tide or other bad weather, they have been delivering the mail regularly this wry for years.
