HUGE FORTUNES UNOER FIRE IN TAMMANY QUIZ 27 Politicians Have Banked $10,000,000 More Than Reported Income. BY SANDOR 8. KLEIN United Press Staff Correspondent NEW YORK, Dec. 23.—Samuel Seabury, counsel of the Hofstadter legislative committee, already has discovered that twenty-seven Tammany politicians and city officials deposited $10,000,000 more than their salaries and reported income. And that figure ,is by no means the limit, according to Seabury. •'I have evidence to show at least 150 other New York politicians and city officials with bank deposits far In excess of their salaries and other legitimate earnings," Seabury told the United Press today. “It Is purely a matter of choosing which one to put on the stand.” For weeks Seabury has had Tammany’s leading lights squirming on the witness stand, hut despite his rigorous questioning, they all have explained clearly how they accumulated their wealth. Cop Forgets Benefactor Sheriff Thomas M. Farley’s deposits came largely, he said, from a “big tin box.” Although his salary during the last six years has averaged but $7,500 annually, he has deposited $360,660 since 1925. James A. McQuade, former Kings county register, had to “help the other thirty-three McQuades,” and for this reason borrowed a sizable portion of the $510,597 credited to his bank and brokerage accounts. Dennis Wright, a former policeman, who complained during his examination, which was on alleged collusion between police and bootleggers, that “cops only get the crumbs,” said he received a good part of his $99,000 from a “seafarin’ man.” He could not recall the name of the philanthropic sailor. Law Firm Got Millions Undersheriff Peter J. Curran wasn't sure but he “assumed” the $662,311 he has deposited since 1925 “must have come from my livery and undertaking business.” New York’s official “cupid,” Deputy City Clerk James J. McCormick, who performs civil marriages, banked $385,000 in seven years. Tips received in performance of his duty, he said, averaged $16,000 annually. He could not account for $150,000. The Tammany law firm of Olvany, Eisner & Donnelly, headed by George W. Olvany, former boss of the wigwam, deposited $5,283,032 in seven years, but Seabury was balked in his efforts to learn its source when Olvany refused to surrender his books. Seabury did develop, however, that the firm had been retained by various real estate organizations to “expedite” cases before the board of standards and appeals, and estimate. It’s name did not appear as counsel of record.

THE problem of what to give is almost as baffling to the giver as what to get in exchange is to the receiver. tt n n IF you get a whiff of an El Ropo or El Cabbago cigar and are suddenly startled by a tie in full bloom, you know that Mrs. Santa Claus has been around. n tt n IF you are a member of the Isaak Walton League, we suggest that as a hint to Santa you hang up fish-net socks. a u u AFTER all we wonder whether Mrs. Claus doesn’t take that trip with Santa. Climbing down people’s chimneys and stealing into strange homes at all hours of the night isn’t, strictly speaking, on the up and up. it tt tt IF the spirit of giving could be made as pleasant as the spirit of taking, we could have Christmas the whole year round. Or maybe Congress could arrange to celebrate birthdays on a monthly or quarterly basis. it it tt The Chief Tire Changer ROSE 'TIRE CO., Inc. 365 S.
