2.500 CONVICTS GIVEN LIBERTY AS YULE GIFT Southern Governors Free Many for Christmas; None in Indiana. Bv United Prefta Nearly 2.500 convicts will spend the Christmas holidays in their homes &nd with friends through generosity of Governors and parole boards in fourteen states, a United Press survey showed today. The figure, a considerable increase over estimates for last year, was surprising, since some state officials had indicated they would not be so free with Christmas pardons and paroles, because of depressed business conditions. Governors and parole boards in nine other states, including Indiana, however, reported they would grant no holiday leaves in their state institutions. Governor Theo Bilbo of Mississippi, about to retire, issued Christmas pardons to 108 convicts Tuesday, but he lost by a wide margin his title of the "pardoning Governor.” In foimer years Bilbo was known as the man with the biggest heart in the south around Christmas time. His place was taken by Governor B. M. Miller of Alabama, who, “believing in human nature,’* Tuesday, threw open prison gates and released more than 1,000 convicts. His °niy instructions to them were to “behave’’ and come back when they are called. Some will not be summoned. Governor Parnell of Arkansas has granted 144 Christmas paroles and six indefinite “furloughs,” also to exceed Bilbo’s generosity. And Governor Horton of Tennessee raised his holiday release list to 114, more than double the number

Need Icy Bath By l. nited Vrtss ST. LOUIS, Dec. 23.—Wanted —lce at the St. Louis Zoo, so the polar bears will turn white again. granted last year. About half were county misdemeanor cases. Governor Sterling of Texas, declaring his people expected their executive to be more lenient at Christmas time, has been issuing pardons at the average rate of ten daily. Former Governor Moody issued few paroles or pardons and none was a special grant. New York set an unusual precedent for that state when the parole board, now a permanent unit of the government’s executive branch, gave Christmas holidays to almost 300 convicts. The board is campaigning to rehabilitate law breakers. Governor Emmerson of Illinois granted ninety-seven paroles to inmates of the state’s penal institutions and Warden White of the Southern Illinois penitentiary released twenty-five prisoners for “good conduct." Unaccompanied and on their honor, 100 boys from the Minnesota State training school, reform institution at Red Wing, departed for their homes today. They are all expected back next Monday. BOYS PREVENT SUICIDE See Man Hanging in Shed, Call Neighbors, Who Cut Him Down. Two boys who ran dowrn an alley and saw a man hanging in a shed prevented the attempted suicide of Richard Molinf, 66, of 1459 Saulcy street, today. The youths called neighbors, who cut Moling down. Moling's wife, who said he had been acting strangely for several days, sharpening his razor and an ax, asked that Moling be locked up.

INDICT HUSBAND FOB ATTEMPT TO KILL WIFE Loren Jackson Is Cited by Grand Jury; Death Pact, Is Defense. Alleged to have attempted to slay his wife while she slept, Loren Jackson, 35, of 3517 Butler avenue, today was indicted by the county grand jury on a charge of assault and battery with intent to kill. Grand jurors charge Jackson slugged his wife Goldie with a wrench Nov. 15. Folow’ing the purported murder attempt, Jackson made an unsuccessful try on his own life by slashing his wrists and throat with a razor. Charges Death Pact He told authorities he and his wife had made a pact to die together because they were unable to provide for their children. She denied this. While probing the case, jurors also investigated the alleged automobile death of Jackson’s first wife, Clara, more than a year ago. He had said his wife was struck by a hit-and-run motorists as she mailed a letter near their home. Relatives, however, claimed they washed blood from Jackson’s car. Charged with having married three times, Mrs. Jean Keen Davenport, 23, of 547 North Traub avenue, today, was named in criminal court on a bigamy count. Obtained Annulment Authorities claim she first was married to Byron Keen in 1929, and then was the bride of William Ligh, 2237 East Eighteenth street, in May, 1930, and John Davenport, a high school student, last July. Ligh recently obtained an annulment of his marriage at the suggestion of county authorities. Twelve indictments and ten discharges were voted by the jury.
