N. Y. WILL GIVE ‘BOOTH MUMMY' COLD SHOULDER There’s Health Board Law of Speedy Burial for All Dead. By f nitrrl press NEW YORK, Dec. 19.—That famous mummy trouping under the proposed alias of John Wilkes Booth, with the distorted right thumb and the broken left fibula, never will play Broadway, if the board of health knows about it. A speedy burial awaits this stuffed assassin, or fake assassin, if it should appear in New York. The city’s health laws require interment within one week, even though the specimen be of historic value or of county fair fame. That is the law quoted at city hall, regardless of the fact that the Metropolitan museum displays a group of Egyptian Pharaohs and that Tex Rickard once exhibited some mummified desperadoes of the old west in a Madison Square Garden sub-basement. Tex seemed to have outwitted city officials by ordering his masterpieces kidnaped, should an inspector appear. Were 28 Years Old Just how the Metropolitan’s mummies are reconciled with the law'; has not been explained, unless it is the 3,000 odd years behind these withered noblemen. Os course, this fledgling undergoing X-rays in Chicago is a mere 28 years old. As to what departed shade this earthly remnant belongs, most investigators accept the history book .story that Lincoln’s assassin' was slain in Garrett’s barn in Virginia and that the ‘body was buried in a Baltimore cemetery. This notwithstanding the discovery of that corroded monogram ring bearing the initial “B” in the stomach of the mummy Ballyhooed as Booth’s, and also remembering the three books of a certain author, two proving prohibition is a success and the third that this mummy is genuine. Toint to Confession Champions of the mummy argue, however, that the wrong man wan killed in that Virginia barn, and point to the numerous confessions of a certain David E. George, alias John St. Helen of Enid, Okla. George’s most famous confession, the pro-Booth. 1 ? argue, was to an Enid priest, when the former felt he was on his death bed. The anti-Booths answer this with the story that George pulled through with a few slugs of brandy and laughed off his confession afterward. These two schools of thought continue through more episodes of a similar nature. They seem to agree only on one point—that George was a strenuous drinker. And the wags say that’s why the mummy is presed so well. LIABILITY UPHELD IN ‘DISOBEDIENCE DEATH’ Infraction of Verbal Orders no Bar to Relief, Court Holds. Disobeyance of verbal orders by a workman does not exempt the employer irom liability, the appellate court has ruled. In an opinion written by Judge Posey Kime, the court upheld the ruling of the state industrial board awarding compensation to Mrs. *sse Mae Miller, Terre Haute, for e death of her husband. He tvas killed while' driving a truck for Ivan L. Morris, Terre Haute. Morris contended that he was not liable because he had warned Miller to stop driving and go to a hotel and rest, the driver having gone for hours without sleep. Under the court’s ruling such verbal orders are not binding. Rules must be written or printed and posted in a conspicuous place, the court held. 5 U. S. WEEKLY LIVESTOCK REVIEW
Week Ending Pee. 18 By V. 8. Dept, of Acrlcultore . , HOGS Local packers absorbed the major portion of the week's hog supply, but apparently would not tolerate higher prices, shipping Interests were handicapped by unsatisfactory eastern trade conditions and low prices for live hogs in the west. Prices fluctuated slightly from dav to day. but the net result ia a loss in values. A top of |4 50 was registered last Saturday and early sales Monday were made on the same basis This position could not be retained, however, and alight downturns have been the rule since early Monday morning. Closing prices today for all weights from ICO to 300 pounds are *4 to *4 20. the latter paid sparingly for a saw choice lights. This is a net loss of 10 to 15 cents compared with last week. The bi .s Question fn almost all minds now is "Where is the bottom and has it been reached?” The usual answer is "Who knows?” CATTLE The past week has been one of the most dlsatrous periods within the recollection of many producers and cattle salesmen, and has been equally unsatisfactory to packers and distributors of dressed meats. The congested condition of eastern morkets has been reflected in no uncertain manner in the terminal markets for livestock. In fact the past week has developed such unusual, although expected, declines, that comparison means little If anything The net result of the week's price change has been a narrowing of the unreasonable spread between strictly choice and near good steers, removing long fed and highly finished descriptions from the pinnacle which they have heretofore held. All grades and classes of slaughter cattle have worked downward during the week, and the loss on steers is estimated from 50 cents to *l. In the opinion of many closely associated with the market, the most disturbing factor is stagnation. In reality the severity of the decline can not be accurately maseured In dollars and cents. Congested conditions in major trade centers and a loss of confidence in the future are paramount to the price concessions enforced this week. At times the principal concern of salesmen was to find a buyer regardless of price. From the buyers' standpoint nothing is cheap unless he has a home for it. £o the result was a series of dull, lifeless markets with the price trend unmistakably downward. Steer sales for the week bulked from *3.75 to $6, the latter price paid for a load of near good lightweights averaging 923 pounds. Two loads scaling 1,072 nounds topped at *9 25 and a load of heavies averaging 1.380 pounds cleared at $8 50. All grades of she stock went to new low levels, with better grade cows and light heifers taking most punishment. Cows suitable for carcass beef are now selling from *2.50 to *3.50 with a few up to *4. representing a loss of 25 to 50 cents. Heifers are an uncertain quantity and a drastic, but unmeasurable, decline has been recorded. Bulk sales range from *3.50 to *6.50, with a few better lightweights from *7 to *8.50. Those selling within the latter range have been so scarce that they might well be ignored. Low cutters and cutter cows closed the period at *1.50 to *2.50 with the exception of a few under *l. Vealers started the Thursday to Thursday period with a flourish, holding to a top of *8 Later conditions did not justify this position and prices have receded to the extent of sl. Strictly choice vealers sold today at *7 with some good kinds at *6.50 pnd lower grades on down to *3.50 and less. Common and medium vealers have been slow movers at uncertain values. SHEEP Lamb supplies during the past week have been normal in volume and fairly well distributed from day to day. Local packers and shippers have operated consistently. but were forced to rduce their ideas slightly in a price wav. It seems that a loss of at least 25 cents has been enforced. Bulk prices today for good and choice lambs are $5.50 to *6.75, compared with $5.75 to *6 a week ago. A few choice ewe and wethers reached $6 Wednesday, and others have sold at $5.85. These are comparable with lambs at *6.10 and $6.25 last week. The downward price trend has not been confined to local trade and there is a normal outlet for all available supplies at prices on a parity with other central markets.
