BOARD TO RIDE OVER PROTESTS ON STREET JOB Jog to Be Removed Despite Objections, Is Indication of City Officials.
against assessments for acquiring property to remove a Jog In East Michigan street, near Highland avenue, were made by more than 100 property owners today at a preliminary hearing before the works board. Despite objections, the board indicated it would go ahead with piano for straightening the jog, opening the street from Highland avenue to the alley west of Dorman street. Options have been obtained upon fix houses and one store building that must be removed. Several property owners, declaring they are out of work, pleaded for the board to postpone the project. “We can do it cheaper now because material prices are low,” E. Kirk McKinney, board president, informed the protesters, “and we don t propose for a few agitators to stop the project.” This brought demand from Peter Raybalt, property owner, that McKinney retract the statement, ' calling us a bunch of agitators.” A few of the protestors finally agreed with the board and said they believed the project would be a safety measure for traffic. The city will pay 60 per cent of the cost of acquiring property, totaling $37,134.40, according to appraisers. Several property owners complained against the appraisments. New route of the street wil Ibe seventy-five feet wide. Street car tracks also must be rerouted. The improvement is part of the board's program to “provide improved traffic routes from the east side to the downtown district,” McKinney explained.

BANK ROBBER GANG STORMS INDIANATOWN Populace Is Terrorized by Machine Gunners; Blow Safe, Get $4,000.. (Continued from Page One) with us and keep your mouth shut,” they said. I “I went with them to the water tank, several hundred yards away, where we met the third man,” 1 Jarvis related. "They called him Hays and Frank, and we walked to the jail. There another bandit was ; setting up a machinfe gun in the alley back of the bank. “I pleaded with them not to put me in the old pail. I said there were two girls up. there and they’d be scared. I said, 'For God’s sake, take me up there. Those kids will be scared to death.’ “They consented and one stood guard in the building stairway and told me to go inside. I said maybe there was a gun in there and the girls would shoot. Not Afraid of Him “What difference does it make if they do,” he yelled. ’’Damn it, open that door and get in there. I’ll be out here.” Jarvis said then the lights were out after one of the bandits pulled the main switch. Telephone and telegraph communication had been destroyed by the robbers before they grabbed Jarvis. Electric clocks in the town stopped at 2:17. “When Jarvis came in, my sister and I were out of bed,” Pauline Smith said. “We sat huddled around the stove and the first blast shook it. I was afraid it would fall over. There were either three or four explosions after that. “Once in a while we looked out the window—Jarvis and me—but we couldn’t see anybody. Jarvis told me that men outside the door was carrying a gun like a cannon. My sister and I weren’t crying, but we didn’t know what to do.
Blasts Shook Building ‘•Every time an explosive went off the whole building shook. “We heard them leave the bank after about forty minutes, and then we lighted matches to try to see the switchboard. Jarvis left me and spread the alarm, and I had two lines left, one to Bainbridge and one to Ladoga. I put in calls to both places and told them to call Indianapolis. “The only thing I hate about it was that I had to sit here helpless and couldn’t do anything but wait. I’ve heard of those things happening to telephone operators, but I never dreamed it would happen to me.” In a childish, shaky voice, Mar-

jorie said she wanted to go to school “right away.” She said she often spent the night with her sister. There are fourteen in her family. Child Is Frightened “I guess I won’t stay up here tonight,” she said. "I’m going to be at home. I guess I was scared and now I want to go to school. “I don’t want Santa Claus to bring me any burglars for Christmas. It was an awful night. "I like to stay down here, but last week somebody shot through the store across the safe. Gee, it was dark in here and those explosions sure made a lot of noise.” Jarvis ran to the home of Ed Hooser, Roachdale deputy sheriff, but by the time they returned to the bank, the smoke had cleared and the bandits had roared west out of the town. “I was scared to death and sick as a horse,” Jarvis said. “My knees shook and I didn’t know what I was going to do. Boy, I sure was one sick and scared guy, there’s no denying that. Pauline and her sister were as brave as they make ’em.” Fires With Squirrel Gun In an alley in the rear of the | store, another episode of the crime | was taking place. Ed Grantham, who hunts most of the time with his long-barrelled single shot squirrel rifle, was awakened. He came from the store where he was sleeping and stood in plain view of one of the bandits, who was guarding the rear door of the bank. “I looks at this guy and thought the damn fool was up to something, so I drew a bead on my gun and let ’er go,” Grantham, said j "The bullet missed his head about ! two inches. And did he get mad! “I never heard a guy cuss like that. He called me everything he could lay hi stongue to and then repeated it. I let him have one more, but that went through the door. Gets Barrage in Return “Then he opened fire. He must have shot more than a dozen times. The bullets were sure passing me, so I ducked behind a brick wall. That took quite a while and then the gang left after that.” Across the street, watching the bandits’ actions, was Otto Fowler, who sleeps as a guard in the Fowler store and who has been involved in three other bandit battles in the last eight months. “But I stood back and watched this one,” he said as he dusted off chairs in tfie Roachdale high school, where he is a janitor during the day. “It wasn’t my door and I figured it wasn’t any of my business. “I knew those boys were hot, because all the lights and everything else had been cut. I had a rifle and a shotgun, but I stayed in the back of the store. It’d been too bad for me, with that machine gun back of that bank half a block away. Heard Four Explosions
“I couldn’t see hoy many fellows were there, but I remember four explosions and I could see their heads in the bank when the blasts lighted up the neighborhood.” And there were others in the neighborhood who heard and saw, but who decided not to try to conquer. These told of the explosions awakening them and their decisions to “stay safe at home.” Bandits Seen Here, Belief The Roachdale bandits were believed to have passed through Indianapolis about midnight, en route to Roachdale, which is about thirty-four miles northwest of this city. Radio Patrolman Tony Deßarr and C. F. Johnson reported a milkman was stopped by six men in a large sedan at East Washington street and Arlington avenue shortly before midnight. They inquired the way to road 67. The milkman said he glanced to the interior of the car and saw “several men” each holding a shotgun. The milkman, whose name was not learned, turned and fled. The robbers’ car then was driven toward the city. Appointed to Academy By Times Special CRAWFORDSVILLE, Dec. 16.
