■STEEL LEADS . STOCK SNARES TO NEW LOWS Break in Bonds Has Bearish Effect on List: Close Is Weak.

Average of htirtv Industrials for Thursday 32.46 rfl 1.68. Average of twenty rails •7*Bl, off .78 Average of twenlv utilities 03 18. off .32. Average of forty bonds 78 53. off .72. BY ELMER c 7 WALZER Unitrn rres* I'lnsnelal Editor NEW YORK, Dec. 11.—Weakness in bank stocks, which sent many to new lows for the last few years, proved an insurmountable obstacle to a rally which got under way on the Stock Exchange today. Steel common dropped to anew sixteenyear low at 46Vs, off 2'* net, in the late trading, and the whole list resumed the decline. According to preliminary calculations, the Dow, Jones <fc Cos. industrial average stood at 79.62, oft 2.84 points, rail average at 35.09, off .72 point, and the utility average at 32.86. off .95 point. Sales totaled 2.400,000 shares, compared with 2,700,000 shares Thursday. High Grade Ronds Break Another factor of weakness which worked against the share market was a break of 1 to 6 points in domestic railroad and industrial bonds. Second grade issues went into new low ground. Even the highest grade. Issues, including American Smelting ss, were under heavy pressure. ‘ Oversubscriptioi cf the. $1,300,000,000 government loans proved too much competition for the listed issues and they sold lower. some making new lows. Grains and cotton moved against Ihe trend in financial markets. Wheat and corn closed with fair sized gains on reports Germany .was to take a large amount of the farm board’s grain. Cotton rose on i bullish week-end figures showing the visible supply decreasing and exports increasing. Volume Picks lip The stock market increased in activity ns the close neared and stock after stock plunged down. A few met support on selective investment, buying, but this was not .sufficient to turn the trend. Rallying tendencies in the afternoon were led by the railroad group. Various reports on the railroad wage meeting at Chicago and agreement among executives on a credit pool to aid weaker roads brought in short covering and the entire carrier list was brought above the previous closing levels. Late in the day private reports from Chicago indicated the railroad workers would not accept a pay cut. That meant, observers said, the roads would give a thirtyday notice on Monday that wages would be cut 15 per cent. Weak Spots Found Several weak spots were uncovered in various sections of the list and wide declines were registered, fine of these was Southern Railway Mobile Sc Ohio certificates which dropped 9 points to anew low at 11. Remington Rand second preferred dropped 14 points to 15 and Standard Gas and Electric 6 per cent preferred lost 14 :! i to 60. Utility issues were sharply lower at, intervals. United Corporation. Electric Power and Light and NorthAmerican were weak. Consolidated Gas met, sporadic support but lost, more than a point for the day. American Telephone came near its low for the bear market. • Transamerica dropped to a record low- on the prospect of a historic fight, for control of the company at the stockholders meeting in February. The Giannini faction has been making threats to overthrow the present regime, headed by Elisha Walker. Walker's group Thursday .issued a blast against the Giannini group, bringing the entire fight into bold relief to the detriment of the stock.

WHEAT SHOWS SMALL GAIN AT SESSION'S END Australian Crop News Is Bullish Factor Late in Day. BY HAROLD E. RAIVYILLE United Press Staff Correspondent CHICAGO, Dec. 11.—Wheat shook i off the depressing influence of the stock market, at least for the time ! being, on the Board of Trade today and scampered upward for nearly a full cent gain under the influence of news rapidly turning decidedly bullish. Australian and Argentine crop comments were less favorable and winter wheat acreage was reported sharply lower. Eastern houses were on the buying side after a week of selling. Export sales were small but inquiries were more numerous with prices around a world parity. Corn j recovered with wheat, but was i draggy. Oats rose above the previous closing levels on the strength in wheat. Wheat Closes Higher At the close wheat was % to l l * I cents higher, corn was unchanged 1 to cent lower and oats were ft to % cent higher. Provisions were | weak. A slight betterment in the sterling exchange gave Liverpool a ft to % pence lower close, equal to unchanged to ft cent down. A pri- : vate expert estimated winter wheat acreage at 14.8 per cent below last | year, or 6.260..000 acres, the smallest | since 1913. Buying in the late l morning was of a good character. Cash prices were unchanged. Receipts were 11 cars. Cash Corn Lower Corn dipped fractionally on the action in wheat at the start but did not show the same amount of recuperative power, standing ft to % cent lower at mid-session. Receipts were slightly larger and this was considered bearish, suggesting a possible increase in the movement. Colder weather in the northwest is likely to improve the cash demand from that section. Cash prices were unchanged to % cent lower. Receipts were 116 cars. Oats lost a minor fraction at the start with the major grains. The market remained unchanged to ft cent lower early in a dull session. Cash prices were unchanged. Receipts were 15 cars.

In the Cotton Markets
'Bv Thomson ft McKinnon) NEW YORK. Dec. 11.—There was an increase in trade buying this morning. The tone was steady throughout the morning and prices at noon were a trifle better than Thursday’s close. Week-end sta- ! tistics were more favorable than j otherwise. v i The market was less disposed to ! take its cue trom the security markets. To us the outstanding feature of the market is the failure of contract markets to reflect southern spot markets, and we think this difference will utimately be made up by an advance in contracts. Hedge sales recently have been very small, reflecting the strength in the holding movement in the south. On the face of the market we can not advise short selling, not only because of the cheap price, but because the seller is at an additional disadvantage on account <ot the value of spot cotton, to which we have already made reference. The market was 10 to 12 points higher in the middle of the afternoon on buying from the south. , NEW ORLFANS January fi.; 2 5.9* 6.10 March 6.30 6 12 6.27 Mav 6.50 6 31 6 46 jy* 6.66 6.48 6.62 October 6.37 6.70 6.87 December 6.04 5.91 6.04 CHICAGO —Dec. 11— .
