BUTLER BATTLES EVANSVILLE IN CAGE OPENER TONIGHT

Blue Vets Begin Fray Sophomore Stars May Get Chance Against Aces. With the brightest prospects since the national championship campaign three years ago, Butler's Bulldogs open their 1931-32 cage activi-

ties tonight at the field house, opposing Evansville college. Five veterans from the successful varsity of last year, led by Marshall Tackett, brilliant guard, are available for action tonight and probably will be in the starting line-up.

Withrow and Ray Miller at forwards, Profltt at center and Chadd and Tackett at guards formed the line-up used most of last season by Coach Tony Hinkle and probably will compose the starting quintet tonight. Bert Davis, forward, Harry Chickcdantz, guard, William Haslett, guard, and Richard Wolfe, center, are other veteran pastimers in harness again and probably will see part- of the action. Os the sophomore stars, Frank Baird, former Tech sharpshooter, is staging the mast successful battle to oust one of the veterans. The elongated forward probably will make his varsity debut tonight. Two other recent Tech stars may see action, Frank Reisner and Ben Parrish, guard. Demmary, a six-foot, four-inch sophomore, also will make his varsity start at center. Tonight’s feature game starts at 8:30, preceded by a preliminary encounter. After tonight’s encounter, the Bulldogs will start preparations for next Monday’s game with Southern California at the fleldhouse.

Kentucky Derby May 7

By Times Special LOUISVILLE. Dec 11.—The 1932 running of the Kentucky Derby, top classic of the American turf, will occur on Saturday, May 7, it was reported here today. The famous event at Churchill Downs usually is held later in May. The 1932 Preakness at Pimlico has been billed for May 14, hence the moving up of the Derby date. It will be the first time in years the Derby will precede the Preakness.

He’s Back With Gophers

If Bernie Bierman can continue his great work at Minnesota, Big Ten football followers are in for some real thrills. The former Gopher half back ace will return to the Minneapolis school next year as head coach after turning in a brilliant record at Tulane, where his Green Wave teams lost but one game in three years and produced several allAmerica stars. Bierman’s 1931 Tulane team generally is recognized as national champions, being the only major unbeaten and untied eleven. Greenleaf Is Winner Over Bennie Allen By United Press PHILADELPHIA, Dec. 11.—Bennie Allen of Kansas City, Mo., a billiard champion when Ralph Greenleaf of New York was a boy in knee pants, stood on the threshold of recovered cue greatness Thursday night and then miscued within twenty-one shots of victory. Greenleaf took advantage of the situation to click off fifty-one balls to defeat Allen, 125 to 104, and retain the leadership in the world’s pocket billiards championship. Allen had runs of 28, 29 and 33, to dominate the first nine innings of play. In other Thursday matches, Marcel Camp defeated A1 Miller, 125 to 88; Robert Lindbloom beat Onofrio Lauri, 125 to 88, and Johnny Layton thumped George Kelly, 125 to 35.
