MINER RECITES GRIEVANCES IN MURDER TRIAL Short Weight, Compulsory Buying at Company’s Store, Charged. Du United Press MT. STERLING, Ky., Dec. 4 A description of labor conditions in the southeastern Kentucky coal fields was drawn from a defense witness in the trial of W. B. Jones, Evarts (Ky.) miner and union official. Jones is charged with conspiracy to murder Jim Daniels, one of three Harlan county deputy sheriffs killed in a gun battle near Evarts last May 5. Mine companies practiced “short weighing against their laborers and forced them to buy food at company commissaries at higher prices, George Sweeton, a member of the miners’ union and the Evarts union aid committee, said. “Can you tell me the naffie of a single miner who was forced to buy at a company commisary?” asked Reid Prewitt, one of the five prosecution attorneys. ‘‘Yes, I was one,” Sweeton replied. “Our boss at the Bennett mine told us plainly that if he caught us buying at any but the company commissary we’d be fired.” “Wasn’t that an advancement on your pay?” the lawyer asked. “No, sir, we had to have time in the office before we could buy a thing.” “We weren’t allowed to have our ' own weighman to stand beside the ! company weighman and check the* weight of the coal we dug,” he said. “Did you ever have a car of coal Weighed and found short?” ‘‘Sure, many times.” “One day I’d be credited with only 1,200 or 1,400 pounds on a car as big as a 2,000-pound car on another day,” Sweeton said.
