STATE DOARDIS ASKED A6AIN TO RUN ATHLETICS Wirt Resolution Provides for Complete Indiana Basket Schedules. Once more the state board of education is asked to enter the high school athletic field. At a meeting of the board today, Superintendent William A. Wirt of the Gary schools and a board member, introduced a resolution which would provide for a complete statewide basketball schedule under direction of the inspection department of the office of the superintendent of public instruction. In explaining the resolution to .reporters, Wirt said that it will be supplemental to the present statewide tournament system carried on under the auspices of the Indiana High School Athletic Commission. First and second school teams will not compete under the new plan but matched teams of other classes and the entire tournament will be conducted with pupils as officials and without immediate direction of the coaches. The Wirt resolution reads, in part, as follows: Be it resolved, that the Inspection division be directed to provide games and athletic contests as a part of the physical education program in such a way that these games and athletic contests will help pupils leam through self activity how to intelligently manage and direct their own lives; and Be it further resolved, that high schools in cities of 5,000 or more population be required to participate in one basketball tournament each
| season conducted under the supj ervision of the school inspection deI partment, and arrange so that the activity will grow naturally out of the physical education work in the schools; and that these tournaments be arranged between schools grouped according to playing ability. Regulations for the games, where students will be officials, are set forth in the resolution. Under a rule of the board, action was postponed until the next monthly meeting. SIO,OOO Asked; SSOO Given By Timet Special BLUFFTON, Ind., Dec. 4.
