WALKER LEAVES MOONEY’S FATE WITH GOVERNOR ‘All We Can Do Is Hope/ Jimmy's Parting Words to Convict’s Mother. BY GEORGE H. BEALE United Presi Staff Correspondent SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 3. Mayor Walker of New York speeded southward to Santa Barbara on the first lap of his homeward journey today, leaving behind a whitehaired convict for whom he crossed the continent to plead a pardon. 11l and worn by the strain of a week’s activities and ths dramatic appeal he made to Governor Rolph of California on behalf of Tom Mooney, the mayor will seek seclusion for forty-eight hours before continuing to New York. The mother whose plea brought Mayor Walker to San Francisco as chief counsel of the Mooney pardon forces, Mrs. Mary A. Mooney, was one of the last persons he visited before his private car left for the south. Rolph Busy With Evidence She kissed the mayor as he en:ered the half-lighted parlor. He poke encouragingly of Mooney’s chances for freedom. “All we can do now, mother, is to hope,” Mayor Walker told her. She tried hard to keep back the tears as they parted. The mayor hurried to his car and was gone. In the Capitol at Sacramento, Governor Rolph busied himself with the pleas and evidence presented at the hearing by Mayor Walker and Frank P. Walsh and Aaron Sapiro, other counsel for the convicted bomber. The farewell of the two leading figures at the hearing was in marked contrast to Walker’s visit with Mother Mooney. It was “your honor” and “your excellency,” when Attorney Walker urged with all the sincerity at his command that Mooney be pardoned. But they met late Wednesday as two old friends. Mooney in Good Spirits “Well, goodby, Jim,” the mayor said as he shook hands in the state building here. “Is there anything more I can do for you, Jimmie?” asked the Governor. “You've already done more than any one else,” Mayor Walker assured him. He was met at the station by State Senator John Hasting, New York, member of his party, and Attorney Walsh, who just had visited Mooney in San Quentin. They reported the famous convict in excellent spirits. Still Believes in Guilt HU United Press LOS ANGELES, Dec. 3.—“ Unfortunate wording” of a letter he had written in San Francisco led to misconstruction of his meaning, Charles M. Fickert, who as district attorney prosecuted Thomas Mooney, said today. He said he still believed Mooney guilty of participation in the 1916 Preparedness day bombing. Fickert, quoted as favoring clemency for Mooney, denied expressing such a sentiment. “I did not mean that,” he declared. “I always have believed Mooney was guilty.”

INFIRMARY IMPROVED Fire Hazards Eliminated, Hogston Is Told. Marion county poor farm has eliminated many fire hazards and orders of the state fire marshal have been carried out there to a great extent, Cash Graham, chief state fire inspector, reported today to Alfred E. Hogston, state fire marshal. Graham made an inspection tour of the poor farm and returned with high praise for county officials responsible for the improvements. Spurred by Times exposures, this was accomplished after years of wrangling between the fire marshal’s office and Marion county officials. “The old men’s building, long condemned and unoccupied, at last has been torn down and a great fire hazard thus eliminated," Graham said. “In addition, fire walls and steel doors have been installed in other buildings, where ordered.”

GUILTY? Or Not GUILTY! of the “Returned Goods” Evil

—"No, I don’t believe I’ll try them on. But I’ll tako these two. Send them home.” —"Oh, yes ... a ‘3B’ fits me perfectly. I’ve worn this size for years.” But, alas! The two frocks spent an active week-end as the subject under discussion along with "why I ever; married you” . . . and Monday morning early, but far from bright, they were returned to the store because of being too small. It’s a merry old game . . . played by all of us with varying degrees of success. In nine cases out of ten the result of one of these willy-nilly "purchases” means the RETURN of the merchandise with the excuse that "It didn’t fit” or "I’ve changed my mind.” Indianapolis Retail Stores are eager to serve you well—but need your co-operation. Don’t "buy” frocks without trying them on, or shirts without knowing the colors and sizes; take the children when they need new shoes; remember, samples are necessary to match materials. Here’s what happens when you return merchandise to a store... If It is not damaged, perhaps it goes back to stock at the same price. BUT if it is soiled, marked, scratched or abused in any way, it is either a partial or complete loss to the merchant. Some “returned” merchandise has to be pressed or otherwise refreshened—before it may be resold. And, whether the store loses part or all on “returns,” there is always the additional handling expense, such as wrapping, delivery, bookkeeping, etc. • And, now, to get right down to hard-pan statistics and percentages that you should know. A recent survey shows that every “return” costs a store 31c to 61c, plus the depreciation in the value of the merchandise . . . and in the last analysis COSTS YOU MONEY—you pay for it in the form of higher prices on the things you buy. It’s the “returned goods” evil that increases the cost of doing business . . . makes assortments smaller and less attractive. Do your share in eliminating it. When the Return of Merchandise is unavoidable • . . please do so within S days ... sooner , whenever possible Decide BEFORE You Buy!
