KILLED RIVAL IN SAVING WOMAN, SLAYERCLAIMS Alleged Attack in Home Led to Shooting, Is Suitor’s Defense. By Timm Special ANDERSON, Ind., Dec. I.—Mrs. Fred Shauman, Wabash, arrived here today to claim the body of her estranged husband, a railroad engineer, who was shot and killed by another suitor while he grappled with Mrs. Erma Whetsel. The killing occurred at her suburban residence Monday night. Joseph Regan, 25, barber, admitted the shooting. He said he fired in defense of Mrs. Whetsel, alleging she was being choked and beaten by Shauman when he fired the fatal shot. It struck Shauman in the back, penetrated a lung and caused death a few minutes later. Two Recount Attack Regan and Mrs. Whetsel are held in jail. In statements to Charles B. Smith, prosecuting attorney, they said they were in the house playing cards when Shauman forced entrance through a rear door, grabbed a chair and struck Mrs. Whetsel in the back. While Shauman backed her against a door, according to the confessions, Regan armed himself with a .32-caliber pistol. He fired one shot. Shauman divided his leisure time between Anderson and Wabash. He had been paying attentions to Mrs. Whetsel for two years, being a frequent visitor at her home which adjoins the Green Lantern dancing pavilion. Three days before the shooting, Mrs. Whetsel said, Shauman accompanied her to a theater. Acted Strangely, Woman Says “He had been acting strangely for the last two months,’’ she said. Mrs. Whetsel and her husband are separated, but not divorced. Regan is unmarried. Sheriff Bernard Bradley will hold the prisoners, pending further investigation. The shooting recalled a brutal attack made on the defendant’s mother, Mrs. Mary Regan, by a robber who entered the family home five years ago. She was robbed, after being beaten and bound. TWO ROBBER SUSPECTS GRABBED BY POLICE Men Are Held on Vagrancy Counts Under High Bonds. Two men were held by police today after they are alleged to have attempted the lobbery of the H. T. COP'S SLUGGER HELD IN CRASH Chicago Man Nabbed After Felling Policeman. After slugging a police officer and fleeing three miles over west side streets, Edward Lyons or Chicago, was arrested Monday night, when his large coupe crashed on railroad tracks at Warman avenue and West Michigan street. Lyons was stopped at White river boulevard and Michigan street by Alva Emmelman and George Connell, radio patrolmen, because there were no lights on his car. As Connell stepped to the running board of the car, the officer reached for a quart of liquor he said was on the seat and Lyons struck him. Connell was hurled from the car and struck a utility pole. Lying in the roadway, Connell was picked up by Emmelman and they started in pursuit. Both cars roared west on Michigan street until Lyons lost control of his automobile at the crossing. Lyons was charged with failure to display lights, drunkenness, operating an auto while drunk, blind tiger and resisting an officer. Connell said he believed he would have suffered serious head injuries when his head struck the pole if it had not been for the protection by the metal badge on his police cap. Arrested with Lyons was Miss Bobbie Mason, Negro, 22, of 925 Darnell street, who was charged with vagrancy. Police said they found her in the car after the crash.
