over the nation today that the person whe speaks such slang phrases as "Oh, yeah” and “says you” is not a social pariah, unless he uses them all the time. The teachers, attending the annual convention of the National Council of Teachers of English, heard experts in the teaching of the mother tongue Insist that: "Americans use compartively little slang. French or Italian vernacular or Cockney English easily outdo American in volume and color of slang."—Dr. Clarence Stratton, director of English in Cleveland. “Colloquial expressions such as a lot of people,’ ’folks back home,’ ‘he fixed the radio’ and ‘he makes S3O a week’ are all right in ordinary conversation or an informal letter,
but wrong in formal essay.”—J. C. Tressler, chairman of the English department, Richmond Hill high school. New York. "American education is suffering from the same affliction that prevails in American business, religion and politics. There are ten times more colleges in this country than are needed. Children get a smattering of this and that and not enough of a synthesis of educational experience.”—Dr. R. L. Lyman, University of Chicago. Dr. Stratton said he did not mind slang unless it was used to excess and developed mental laziness that prevented acquisition of good English, He said he believed “English is growing better in this country.”
