Lord of the Skies—No. 4 20,000 GALLONS GASOLINE LOAD OF GIANT AKRON Dirigible Also Carries Six Tons of Oil, Fifty Tons of Ballast Water. BY ERNIE PYLE ftcrlnns-Hnward Aviation Editor WASHINGTON, Nov. ?4.—ln this final article on the U. S. D. Akron, we shall answer some o£ the questions asked since the big airship left its dock in Akron a few weeks ago, and began its flights which have thrilled millions in the east and middle west. Here are the answers: The Akron is 785 feet long. If it were set upon end, it would stick up a half a city block above the top of the Washington monument. If you were to make three and a half round trips along the catwalk running along the top, you would have walked a mile. About 85 per cent of the dirigible is filled with gas bags. The rest is devoted to living quarters, airplane hangar, corridors, machinery, and girders. The Akron carries 20,000 gallons of gasoline for the motors. It is held in 110 tanks, and a third of these can be dropped instantly through the airship’s hull in case of emergency. The ship also carries six tons of lubricating oil, and fifty tons of water ballast. There are big panels running up the outside of the ship just above the motors. There are five on each side. They are the condensers. They condense water from the motor exhaust. Theoretically, they can make 135 pounds of water for every 100 pounds of gasoline burned.

PERHAPS it was a happy coincidence that the Indiana marked the return of Charlie Davis to his home town with a picture titled Local Boy Makes Good. # tt tt THE Prison band played Stars and Stripes Forever at the Sing-Sing game. The stripes part fits right in the picture. tt tt OF course they might have played the Prisoner’s Song and left out a few bars. tt AT that the Snake Oil which Representative John Garner used by mistake for shortening in bread while acting as Chef on a camping trip should prevent any bad after-effects of his cooking. a tt SIGHTS about town: Police car towing in a motorcycle for overparking. Now if we could just see a police car towing in a horse and buggy the day would be perfect. We wonder how Dobbin would look with his front legs on high. a a tt NEWS headline: “Grandi, attending Baltimore Church, borrows money twice for collection.” Company excepted, just a good old European custom. tt tt tt ANOTHER concrete example of business pick-up is the increase in cement shipments. a a tt AN inspiring sight. Standing on the steps of the Main Library and looking down the long concourse of the War Plaza. Take along your camera. And send some of the views to your friends out of town. Show them something of which you can well be proud.

It Is necessary to do this In order to create weight to equalize the loss of gasoline. Otherwise they would have to valve off expensive helium gas to keep the ship from going too high. The living quarters are heated. Air is forced over the exhaust mani- | folds of the eight motors, and then piped to the living quarters, i Although you can't notice them | from the ground, there are windows ! all over the sides of the Akron. Most of the ship’s interior is well lighted, either by natural sunlight or electricity. Yet there are a few dark corners. All members of the crew carry flashlights. The sailors have short ones, the officers long \ ones. Maybe it’s an emblem of j rank! The crew works in “watches,” four hours on and four hours off, just as at sea. When they are ofT, ; the sailors go to Y :d. There is a telephone system | throughout the ship. There are eighteen phones. Control is direct. That is, when i the helmsman in the control car turns his wheel, it exerts a direct pull, through long cables, on the i tail rudders. It takes ten turns of the wheel to throw the rudder hard over. The dirigible has rudders and elevators only, no ailerons. Thus there is no direct control over the tendency of the ship to roll. But it rolls very little, because most of the

load is carried in the bottom. The twelve immense helium ga* bags are inclosed in rope and wire nets. The gas bags, of course, have a tendency to rise. This lift is | transferred to the nets. The nets i are tied to the ship's framework, thus lifting the whole dirigible. The Akron as yet has no guns. I There are bases for machine guns I in the control car, the rear fins and all along the top. Later they will mount “camera guns” on top of the dirigible, have planes get up above and “dog fight,” and see just where ! guns are needed for protection. The Akron probably never will carry any bombs or torpedoes until 1 an actual war comes along. At full speed, the Akron can fly 5,000 miles without coming down. Throttled down to forty-miles an hour, it can cruise 14,000 miles, nearly around the world. THE END.
