SAFETY BOARD, JUDGE CAMERON IN BAILIFF ROW Jurist Ignores Appointment of Gamewell Operator as Court Aid. Municipal court three had two bailiffs today because of a deadlock between Judge Clifton R. Cameron and members of the board | of safety. The trouble began Tuesday when the board made a shift in the bailiffship, ordering Marty Logan, police Gamewell operative to replace Howard Sanders, present bailiff. In conference Tuesday afternoon with Police Chief Mike Morrissey, Cameron declared he would refuse to sanction the change in personnel. Morrissey, on the other hand, insisted Logan was Cameron’s new bailiff. When Cameron convened court this morning, Logan and Sanders were on hand for duty. ‘Never!’ Says Judge But a t noon today, Logan still j was waiting to begin his new duties, j while Sanders, attired in the bailiff’s ! official uniform, kept, right on serving as bailiff. With Morrissey and members of the hjard insisting Logan now is! bailiff by “all authority of the law, ’ Cameron declares that “as long as I m judge, Logan never will be my , bailiff.” And the city legal department, lit- j erally "up a tree,” can't do anything about it. “I can’t say anything about it because the matter hasn’t been laid before me,” E. IL Knight, corporation counsel, said Authority Disputed But impartial attorneys, pointing to a 1925 statute, give the safety j board the edge in the controversy.! The statute states that the safety hoard Shall have power to appoint the bailiff in criminal municipal courts. Cameron has a different, interpretation of the law, however. He says the safety board "can’t make, an appointment where there is no vacancy.” “I knew' nothing about the change,” he declared. When court adjourned, however, Logan was waiting in a corridor to consult the judge. “I want to see you, judge,” Logan said. “And what for?” Cameron | questioned. “Well, I think you know, judge,” was Logan’s answer. Not "Patched lip" 'Well, Logan, I've know you for a long time and haven’t a thing j against you. But I’m judge, and :' my say goes,” Cameron answered. | “I’d like to see you alone just five | minutes,” Logan said as Cameron j walked away. Cameron told reporters he had j talked to members of the safety \ hoard and that the matter was "all j patched up.” "They said they wouldn't do any- ; thing like this," Cameron stated. But Charles R. Myers, safety board president, asserted differently. ; "The appointment stands as made,” he declared. LOOT IS RECOVERED Negro Held After Seizure In Raid; Eleven Purses Found. Numerous north side purse snatchings and burglaries were believed solved today with the arrest of Dave Bonner, Negro, 32. of 1938 Cornell avenue, by Sergeant Leo Troutman and squad. Troutman said a search of the nouse revealed eleven purses, money, wearing apparel, auto license plated razors and beads. Bonner is held under high bond on a vagrancy charge. PcUce said he has been arrested several limes. County Attorney Chosen B>J Times Special ANDERSON, Ind„ Nov. 18.—Walter Vermillion will become Madison county attorney Jan. 1 when Democrats gain control of the board of commissioners.
