LESLIE ENTERS BATTLE ON GAS ‘BOOTLEGGERS' Governor’s Ire Aroused by Oil Dealers’ Recital of Ogden Compromise, v Governor Harry G. Leslie today took a hand in the fight against gasoline bootlegging in Indiana. He called a conference with At-torney-General James M. Ogden regarding a former compromise gas tax settlement and asked for legal advice as to possibility of giving special aid In the gas tax matter by employing investigators to be paid from his emergency fund. Paced by a group of organized oil men Monday, Leslie declared himself opposed to such compromise settlements as had been “made by guess’* in the attorney-general’s office two years ago. Ogden took $20,000 cash from Poole Harrison, Chicago, for SIOO,OOO tax due from the Knickerbocker Refining Company, Hammond, and permitted an additional $5,000 to be paid on the installment plan. The oil men calling on the Governor Monday disclosed that the entire $5,000 has not yet been paid, and emphasized the unfairness of settling a SIOO,OOO tax evasion for $25,000. Leslie promptly agreed. Rauch Is Spokesman H. L. Rauch of the Indian Refining Company was spokesman for the group and declared that they were out to fight against compromises and Installment settlements. They wanted Governor Leslie to join with them in appointing a committee of three to double check the gas collections. Leslie pointed out that the entire matter is under the state auditor and beyond his control. Floyd E. Williamson, state auditor, who was invited to the conference by the Governor, pointed out that the SIOO,OOO compromise was made under his predecessor, A. N. Bobbitt. Bobbitt is a Republican, Williamson a Democrat. It also was brought out that the committee represented the big organized oil dealers and Williamson said that there is a rival organization of smaller independents. Defends Fartial Payments He inquired if the gasoline bootleg wasn’t originally purchased from big refineries, and asserted he knew that the bfg companies made tank wagon drivers notaries so they could help the farmers pile up the SIBO,000 agricultural refunds. In defending partial payments for back tax, Williamson said he didn’t intend to drive the little fellow out of business, and gave him the benefit of the doubt when he declared a mistake had been made. But Ranch, spokesman for his committee representing such giants as Lincoln, Shell and Standard Oil, contended that the dealer who didn't buy more than two cars a month couldn’t be mistaken in knowing whether or not the tax had; been paid. Upshot of the meeting appeared to be the opportunity for Williamson to appoint some more “deserving Democrats” to his field force for gas tax collections. He now has five. Most Beech Grove residents own their own homes and, because of increasing population, few of the remaining houses are vacant. Premises of Beech Grove homes are clean and neat-appearing. Most of the town’s streets are well paved. Efficiency of its fire department is demonstrated by the fact that the insurance base rate there is the lowest in the state, the same as that for Indianapolis. Residents of Beech Grove are lawabiding and cause so little trouble that the town, nearing a population of four thousand, has no jail, according to H. A. Terrell, town marshal and fire chief.
