SENATOR JIM ‘PUT ON SPOT' AT LOVE FEAST Watson Runs Into Veritable Hornet’s Nest at Big ‘Harmony Rally.’ BY BEX STERN Times Staff Corresnondent CRAWFORDSVILLE, Nov., 3 Back against the wall, not flgurar tively, but literally, fists shaking under his nose, cries of “Who’s a liar?’’ in the air, Senator James E. Watson, majority leader of the senate, advisor of Presidents, and world political figures, was “put on the spot” Monday afternoon by a group of precinct committeemen. Brickbats and roses, flourishing fists and lavish eulogies were the gifts of his party to the “Real Republican,” as he celebrated his six-ty-seventh birthday and the thirtyseventh anniversary of his election to congress, at a Sixth district harmony meeting that was distinguished by a lack of harmony. And the cause of Senator Jim’s woe was the thing that has killed more politicians than bullets—postmasterships. This time it concerns the postoffice at Terre Haute. Watson Is Dazed In the midst of receiving congratulations on his birthday, Watson was backed into a corner by _ eighty of the eighty-six Vigo county precinct committeemen and told that “Hugh Cuthbertson, the county chairman, has to be named postmaster.” The onslaught was so unexpected that for a moment, for the first time in his political career of forty years, Watson was dazed. Slowly backing toward the neutral corner Jim looked about for aid, all the time taking in on the chin. _ “Lucky” Arthur Robinson, the junior senator, who shares responsibility for the appointments in districts represented by Democratic congressmen, as usual, was not present when the heavy shelling got under way. Dash Out of Room Noble Johnson of Terre Haute, former congressman, whose dereliction of duty caused the entire fuss, “high tailed” out of the room at the first hint of the breaking storm, - while Representative Fred Purnell of Attica, in whose new district Vigo county has been placed, said he “had to go wash his hands.” “The organization wants Cuthbertson and you have to appoint him,” Watson was told. “I want to appoint him postmaster, but he wasn’t placed on the : r eligible list after two civil service I examinations,” he retorted. Someone in the audience shouted j something about “liar.” Z Climbing on a chair, Watson j yelled “Who’s a liar?” Goes Into the Battle And then Jim went into the battle. He declared that he believed that the organization’s choice should have the postofflee berth. “I am an organization Republican,” Watson cried. “Cuthbertson is the organization's choice and I am for him, but he isn’t on the eligible list. Both Robby and myself have to pick from the three highest and Hugh isn’t there, r. “Why?” came the shout. “Ask the civil service commission,” Watson retorted. “When the first examination revealed Hugh’s name was not carried I went to the head -of the commission and got What no other senator in the whole United States could —another examination, and even then Cuthbertson couldn’t make the list. Against Service Idea “I am against the, entire civil service idea. It has caused me more grief than any other single thing,” Jim declared. “But I can’t do anything now, Cuthbertson wasn’t "picked.” The storm broke again with de- _ mands of “We don’t want any one but Cuthbertson. He has been dou-ble-crossed and traded out.” r “I can’t set aside the civil service commisison single handed,” cried Watson, still looking aboufr for aid. But no help came. Robinson did not attend the district love feast . and neither Johnson nor Purnell w r ould come into the meeting room. Passed Buck to Senators If there ever was venom in any ~ one’s heart, it almost would be seen in Watson’s at that moment. Johnson’s term as congressman expired last March, but the term of " Will Hays, the Terre Haute postmaster, terminated in February, and the congressman could have ordered an examination. Instead, he passed the buck to the senators. One of the state’s bitterest postoffice battles broke then. The eligible list selected the following three in the order named: William B. Hice, assistant postmaster; John W. Wood, county chairman, 1922-24, and Charles G. Reynolds. The committeemen present shouted that Hice was a Democrat, that ' Wood hadn’t voted in years, and Z that Reynolds was not a party worked. All this happened in the afternoon. At the night meeting Jim was presented with a basket of ; roses by Judge Eugene Rice on behalf of the Republicans in the Sixth district and made his usual type of speech, defending the Hoover administration.

Just a Loan By United Press EVANSTON. 111., Nov. 3 When A1 Capone was sent to jail after his conviction on charges of income tax evasion, he gave $lO to William Dawson, his cellmate. After Dawson was freed he bought liquor with Capone’s gift. He was back in jail today, serving out a $lO fine for drunkenness.
Cuthbertson declared today. “But I do hope some common ground of Cuthbertson said that the commission appraisal of several years ago is available in the case of the water company properties, but that the commission never has made an audit and appraisal of the electric plant. Company appraisals were used by the commission in approving the merger of electric properties here in 1927. Basis of the rate reduction petition is the decreased cost of reproduction now and the contention that returns on present investment are excessive. - Horse Bites Off Baby’s Finger By United Press CHICAGO, Nov. 3. Charles Browning, 22 months old, leaned out of his buggy and petted the dairy wagon horse on the nose. Passersby looked on amused. They were horrified to see the horse suddenly bite off one of the baby’s fingers.

DRY FORCE TO FEEL HOOVER'S ECONOMY AX 2,500 Agents to Be Retained Despite Budget Cut; Arrests Increase. BY THOMAS L. STOKES United Press Staff Correspondent WASHINGTON, Nov. 3.—President Hoover's economy program will extend to prohibition enforcement. No increase in the number of dry agents under Amos W. Woodcock, federal prohibition director, is provided in the budget to be submitted to congress, it was learned today. The force will be maintained at its present strength of 2,500, despite reports an increase would be sought. Though no figures have been published, the requested amount for the prohibition bureau is expected to run between $9,000,000 and $10,000,000. Last year congress appropriated $11,000,000, of which $2,000,000 was for 500 additional agents, who were •inducted into service only four months ago. Woodcock holds that more money for prohibition enforcement is unjustified in this time of depression

INDIAN ADMITS KILUNGCO-ED Attacked, Stabbed Her on Way to Dance. By United Press GLOBE. Ariz., Nov. 3.—An Indian youth, bewildered by the ways of white men, was held in the Gila county jail today on a charge of mudering an' attractive white girl, who came from New York to study his people at close range. The Indian, Golney (Mac) Seymour, 21-year-old Apache, confessed he assaulted and stabbed Miss Henrietta Schmerler, 24, a Columbia university student, according to J. A. Street, department of justice agent. Miss Schmerler* last May setled In a tiny cabin, far from other dwellings, on remote White river reservation. She dresed as an Indian squaw, kept company with young braves and participated freely in the tribe’s social life. Last July 18, according to Seymour’s confession, he called at Miss Schmerler’s cabin to take her to an Indian dance. The assault occurred en route. It was followed by the killing so “she wouldn’t tell the white men,” he said. The girl’s battered body, clad in Indian dress was found July 24 by a group of Apaches after a two-day search.
