2 MEN RESCUED AFTER DRIFTING 8 DAYS AT SEA Plane Speeds to Stalled Motor Boat Sighted by Coast Guard. l n it* •l Prphh NEW YORK, Nov. 3.—Two men Were rescued today by a coast guard cutter outside New York after they had remained for eight days in a disabled, ojjen motor boat while hundreds cf ships passed all around them. They left Rockaway beach on 0:;t. 25, and were not seen again until the cutter picked them up today in a serious esndition from starvation and exposure, though many ships had passed them without realizing they were in distress. The men are David Warssauer, 31, and his brother-in-law, Irving Tuchner, 28, a pocketbook manufacturer. Rescue Plane Sent The story of the men's rescue was revealed in a radio dispatch from the coast guard cutter Cuyahoga which sent a New York police department amphibian to sea to pick the men up and bring them in to the Brooklyn Harbor hospital. The cutter was steaming lazily along this morning 135 miles north of New York harbor when the lookout saw the idle motorboat. Through his glasses the cutter’s captain saw two prone forms in the bottom of the boat and immediately altered his course. ' The men were so exhausted they hardly could give a coherent story, but Tuchner revealed how the motorboat had broken down soon after they left Rockaway beach and the boat steadily had been forced out to sea. They treated it as a joke at first, thinking some boat would come along and tow them in, but after the third day the seriousness of their situation became apparent. Brushed by Liners Their hunger was intense by the fourth day and they had begun to suffer from the bitterly cold night winds. Once a liner came so close to them they could see passengers waving at them. They waved back desperately, hoping to attract attention, but the liner continued on its way, not realizing the men’s distress. Warshauer collapsed Monday in the bottom of the boat. During the night, another liner alight from stem to stern passed near them and though Tuchner shouted until he was hoarse he could not attract attention. He sank down into the bottom of the boat and almost perished in the night’s cold sea winds. While the police airplane sped out to get. the two men in an effort to save their lives special instructions liow to care for the men in their weakened condition were sent by wireless. CHICAGO BANDITS ROB DIAMOND SALESMEN Clems Worth $200,000 Stolen in Gun-Enforced Ride. Bn I nifed l’rcsa CHICAGO, N o v. 3.—Bandits pounced on two diamond salesmen from the east as they strolled down j Congress street just off Michigan boulevard today with a reported {5400,000 worth of uncut diamonds in their satchels. They took the visitors for a gunenforced ride and kicked them out, one minus gems he valued at $200.000 and the other with his diamonds intact because he had a glib tongue. The easterners, Joseph C. Newman, representative of the diamond importing house of F. L. Von Wezel, New York, and H. A. Siegel, representing the firm of Potter & Buffinton, Newark, N. J„ picked themselves up from the street on Prairie avenue, thirty-five blocks south of the loop. GANDHI TO ROYAL TEA The Mahatma Will Visit Palare in Shawl and Loin Cloth.
