FORD COMPANY EXPLAINS SLASH OF WA6EJSCALE Reveal Hike 22 Months Ago Boosted Pay Rolls About $35,176,000. By United prei DETROIT, Oct. 30—The Ford Motor Company, in a formal statement issued today announcing its wage reductions, said that the increase in basic pay granted twentytwo months ago by Henry Ford had increased his normal pay roll total $35,176,000. The reduction in the basic pay was from $7 to $6, the system of automatic raises to employes was readjusted, and the probationary rule by which a man has been hired at $5 a day during a six months’ period has been abandoned, the statement said. “The Ford Motor Company,” read the statement, “added an emergency dollar to its wage rate, increasing its minimum from $6 to $7 a day on Dec. 1, 1929. Proportionate increases were made to every employe in every plant. “During the twenty-two months, this emergency rate was in operation, the increased wage has cost the company $35,176;101. Total pay rolls for the last twenty-two months amounted to $397,442,837. “The shops three weeks ago returned to the $6 a day minimum for ordinary labor, grading upwards in the more skilled jobs. “At present, the company has employment only for men who are on its rolls.” The world’s largest automobile manufacturer’s pay roll thus was revealed ,as an average of about $18,000,000 monthly during the last two years. If the Ford pay roll does not exceed 100,000 men that would be an average pay of yBO a month for Ford employes and officials.

Laskowski, weather forecaster at Topeka, Kan., is a great aid to his wife, especially in the performance of her domestic duties. If, on Monday morning, he says to Mrs. Laskowksi: "Watch out for rain today,” Mrs. Laskowski postpones her weekly washing. In the winter time, the forecaster may say: "Snow tomorrow.” That, declares his wife, is a signal for hot soup. The Laskowski home also is a sort of barometer of domestic planning in their neighborhood. If Mrs. Laskowski hangs out her clothes early on a Monday morning, the other wives know the weather is all right and out go the clean clothes. SWAP COTTON FOR CAR Barter Schemes Are Reported in Mississippi Belt. JACKSON, Miss., Oct. 30.—Cotton is being “swapped” for automobiles here. A dealer made an offer of 10 cents a pound on cotton to the farmers if they \ would use that credit for down payments on used cars. Other bartering schemes with the staple have been reported, but this is the first instance of autos being exchanged for cotton. MOTOR BUS IS ‘STOLEN’ Parked Vehicle and Passengers Are Driven Off by Error. By United Press BOSTON. Oct. 30.—A Boston elevated motor bus, loaded with passengers, was reported stolen here. It seems that operator Thomas Lane parked the bus in the Back Bay and entered a building. When he came out a few minutes later the vehicle was gone. Investigation revealed that John Perrin, a relief operator, had driven the bus along its scheduled route by error. CHILD, 3, IS PRODIGY Oklahoma Boy Can Name States, Capitals; Shark at Figures. By United Press DURANT, Okla., Oct. 30.—Louis Whitworth, 3-year-old son of J. L. Durant, can name all the state and their capitals, the seventy-seven counties in Oklahoma and Bryan county officials. BY BEN STERN WITH announcement of George Dale, mayor of Muncie, that he will be a candidate for the Democratic nomination for Governor on a one-sentence platform, “Turn the rascals out and restore the government to the people,” he becomes the second avowed candidate in the field. The other is Ward Hiner, Indianapolis bus operator, who seeks the Governorship as an independent. If nothing else, Dale’s campaign is to be one of epigrams based upon actual truths. He also declares he will save the taxpayers thousands of dollars by the few following simple reforms. “If I am elected,” he declared while on a visit to the state house, “I will abolish the state tax board and appoint Harry Miesse, secretary of the Indiana Taxpayers’ Association and representative of the New York Central Railroad, to* serve in the place of the three present members. “All the qpts made by the state board are based on figures and statistics compiled by Miesse, anyhow, and figure what the saving would be in the salaries of the three commissioners, their aids and secretaries. “And then look what a pleasure everybody would have in walking across the corridor to the Governor’s office and listen to him fire Miesse. tt tt tt “Then I would abolish the public service commission and appoint Robert Feustel, manager of the Insull utilities in Indiana, to replace the members. “From all indications, he is running the commission anyhow, and there would be another great saving in the salaries of the five commissioners, their secretaries and staffs of engineers,” he charged. “When I would get through with the state commissions and boards, a bungalow would be big enough to house the state offices and officials. “What we need in Indiana is a return to home rule,” says Dale. “The officials elected by the people in the various localities are the ones who should say what the tax rate should be and how the utilities should be regulated, instead of a bunch of office holders appointed by the Governor, who soon finds that they are not responsible to him, but to the private corporations and interests.” tt Dale is full of his grievances against the tax board for cutting the Muncie city levy to 69 cents. After “cussing out” the state commissions and his own city council, he declared: “As master of ceremonies following my inauguration, it will be my pleasure to change the state house ballad from ‘Hail, Hail, the Gang's All Here’ to ‘Home, Sweet Home’ and make ’em sing it on the run.” And he voiced the prophecy that “Hoosiers will see the situation my way before the next campaign is over.”

STARTS ON JOB OF REBUILDING! BRITISH CABINET MacDonald to Confer With Leaders; Tariff Step Is Imminent. BY WEBB MILLER L'nited Fress Stiff Correzpondent LONDON, Oct. 30.—Premier J. Ramsay MacDonald proceeded with the reconstruction of his cabinet today, preparatory to balancing Britain’s budget and taking up the imi portant international matters of ! lebts and reparations. The cabinet officers and other j members of the government already have surrendered their portfolios to the prime minister, but will continue in office pending the cabinet revision. MacDonald will confer with Stanley Baldwin, Conservative leader, and Sir Herbert Samuel, National Liberal, again next week, but it vas doubtful if the cabinet would be announced before parliament meets Tuesday to elect a speaker and swear in the members for the formal opening Nov. 10. The cabinet Tuesday probably will appoint a committee to examine the whole question of the trade balance, including a possible tariff. If a tariff is decided on, its introduction before the end of the year is regarded as unlikely. The king’s speech opening parliament Nov. 10 may be one of the briefest in recent years, touching only sketchily on proposed legislation, which will be left to the government to work out carefully. Parliament probably will be in session only three weeks before recessing for the holidays. There seemed little doubt that Britain will be in the forefront of any move for international conferences on war debts and the gold problem, although there will be no decision on any important international question until after the cabinet reconstruction. TAX FIGHT TO COURT City Determined to Avoid 2-Cent Reduction. City officials, led by Mayor Reginald H. Sullivan and advised by the city legal department, will go to court in their fight to restore the 2 cents which the state tax board recently sliced from the civil city tax levy. This was announced today by Edward H. Knight, city corporation counsel, who has spent several days studying possible legal redress from the tax board’s decision. Reminded that the Marion county circuit court upheld the city’s levy request against reduction of 1 cent by the tax board last year, city officials hope for a similar decision. Guardians Are Asked By Times Special HARTFORD CITY, Ind., Oct. 30. —Petitions seeking appointment of guardians for two aged sisters, Sadie Harrison, 81, and Lydia Personett, 79, have been filed in Blackford circuit court here by Virgil Whitecotton, who alleges they are incapable of managing their affairs.
