Smith are attempting to “spike” the presidential campaign of Governor Franklin D. Roosevelt, according to the vice-chairman of the Hofstadter legislative committee. The move, Assemblyman Hamilton F. Potter, the vice-chairman, said, is intended as a warning to Roosevelt to Q u it interfering with Tammny Hall’s “racketeering interests.” Potter, political protege of W. Kingsland Macy, Republican state chairman, told the National Women’s Republican Club Monday that 'the most conspicuous example of cynical attitude toward public life was the speech of former Governor Smith at the recent Tammany rally.’* referred to Smith’s appearance there with Democratic officials and leaders questioned recently by Samuel Seabury concerning their enor*tlous hank deposits explained by oiie as money “borrowed for thirtyfour starving relatives.” "To his eternal shame,” Potter said Smith W'ith loud and blustery tones devoted his efforts to praising Tammany and its principles.” CITY’S FUTURE BRIGHT, SAYS U. OFFICIAL Half-Million Population in 15 or 20 Years Is Predicted, Picturing the Indianapolis of the future as the center of a vast network of highways, John Guernsey of Washington, statistician for the department of commerce in charge of government census on retail distribution, Monday told city business men Indianapolis would have a halfmillion population in fifteen or twenty years. The retail census, the first undertaken by the government, shows 4,912 retail stores in Indianapolis, and 5.365 in the county. Net sales for the county, Guernsey said, totaled $228,592,745, of which $220,697,946 were in Indianapolis. Guernsey spoke at a luncheon in the Chamber of Commerce, sponsored by the marketing commission of the chamber.

JOHN HERRON MAY BUY HOPKINSON PAINTINGS Purchase of New Pictures to Be Discussed by Committee. Purchase of new pictures for the John Herron Art institute will be discussed by the fine arts committee today at a meeting with the board of directors. The pictures, works of Charles Sidney Hopkinson, portrait painter, are on display at the institute, and final decision on the purchase will be made. At a meeting Monday night of the Art Association, Augustus Vincent Tack, American mural painter, spoke on "The Realm of the Subconscious.” Seven decorative panels by Tack, on display at the institute, will be returned to the Phillips Memorial Gallery in Washington, where they are exhibited permanently.
