STOCK SHARES MOVE UP WITH RAILS IN LEAD # U. S. Bonds Meet Pressure Induced by Higher Money Rates. Average Stock Prices Average of thirty industrials for Thursday 98.71. up 1.44. Average of twenty rails 53.70. up 1.04. Average of twenty utilities 39 55. up .84. Average of forty bonds 85.18, off .20. BY ELMER C. WALZER United Press Financial Editor NEW YORK. Oct. lu.—Stocks rose 1 to 6 points today and held a large amount of the gain desptie last minute profit-taking. Bonds were distinctly irregular, featured by a crash in United States government issues, all but one of which made new lows for the year or longer. The United States issues were sold on firmer money brought on by Thursday’s rise to 3® per cent in the New York federal reserve bank rediscount rate. According to preliminary* calculations the Dow, Jones & Cos. industrial average stood at 102.49, up 3.78 points; rail averages 56.64, up 2.94 points, and utility average at 40.78, up 1.23 points. Sales totaled 1,400,000 shares, compared with 1,300,000 shares yesterday. Wheat and other grains firmed up and cotton was making new highs for the day as the end of the session neared. Trade Is Dull Trading in stocks was on a small scale. What buying developed was helped along by a vote of confidence given the Bruening government in Germany, a more optimistic tone in the weekly trade reviews, anticipation of a favorable response from the interstate commerce commission on the railroad petition for a higher freight rate, and the better commodity markets. Railroad shares led the market throughout the day. At one time Atchison was up nearly six points and others one to more than three points. More than half the gains were retained. Utilities held gains ranging to two points. Steel Forges Ahead Later in the day, United States Steel made progress ahead after a brief period of profit-aking. It was brief period of profit-taking. It was previous close, buying helped by anticipation of increasing business for steel companies from the automobile .trade and early estimates that the corporation would see “fit to declare the same dividend on common paid in* the preceding quarter.” Steel directors meet for dividend action Tuesday, Oct. 27. Leading industrials followed Steel upward. Gains of 1 to more than 3 points were recorded in J. I. Case, Westinghouse Electric, Allied Chemical, Dupont and American Can. Call Money Rises The higher rediscount rate had no apparent effect on the stock market. The jise was not entirely unexpected and traders were inclined to the belief it would have a beneficial effect in the long run. Selling in the United States bonds was a result of firmer money rates. Following the advance in the rediscount rate, call money rose to 2!£ per cent for the first time since December, 1930. Time money was firmer as was commercial paper, bankers acceptances and interest rates generally. The widest break in United States loans was in treasury 3y 8 per cent bonds, which broke more than four points in one of the widest declines ever witnessed in this class of bonds. With United States bonds selling down so rapidly, the street came to the conclusion that foreign governments had about decided reparations payments would not be resumed after the Hoover moratorium expired. By United Press CHICAGO, Oct. 16.—The Federal Reserve bank of Chicago announced today that its rediscount rate would be raised from 2'i to 3V6 per cent, effective Saturday.
BANK RATE HIKE CHECKS GOLD LOSS
Move Also Seen as Credit Aid in Restoration of Confidence. By United Press WASHINGTON, Oct. 17.—The large outpour of gold from the United States in recent weeks and the hoarding of money in this country, totaling together over a billion and a half dollars, were measured today by the delicate barometer furnished to financiers in rediscount rates. Increase of the New York reserve bank’s rediscount rate, effective today, from 2Vg to 3% per cent, the second upward trend in a week, was directly tied up with the exodus of gold and the billion dollars hoarded in safe deposit boxes, tin cans and mattresses. * * Withdrawal of this huge amount from the channels of credit leaves less money available for credit. At the same time there appears a probable increase in the demands for credit. Gold is the basis of credit. Therefore, with Jess available and general demands for it, credit becomes more costly. Almost simultaneously with the announcement of the New York reserve bank's rate increase, which is expected to be followed by others, the reserve board here published its weekly report which explained the withdrawals. Gold stocks of the United States, still huge, were reduced by $218,000,000 in the past week to $4,424,000,000 by transfers abroad, the report revealed. Further, it showed that during the last month gold stocks have been reduced by $591,000,000 since the peak of $5,015,000,000 of Sept. 17. Officials believe the present financial program will turn the hoarded money back toward the banks through restoration of confidence. The figures showed an increase of money "in circulation,” representing withdrawal from banks, of $42,000,000 in the past week-' In the

‘UNTANGLEROF JAMS’ Traffic Cop of 1907 Now Seeks Watchman Post. Picture a traffic jam at the corner of Meridian and Washington streets in*l9o7. The gay boys of the town were violating the law by refusing to turn their carriages in the center of the street and dashing on the wrong side, endangering the lives of persons getting off street cars. It was this situation that Charles R. Poole, then a traffic officer, corrected by taking his post at the center of the intersection and ordering the rig drivers to make their turns around the spot he occupied. Since then Poole, who is ss, resigned from the force and has been buffeted by fate. He’s looking for a job. He wrote The Times today saying he wants a job as a fireman or watchman and prefers the job on a surburban estate “more for*a home than wages.” Poole lives at 515 South West street. CHILD, 12, SOUGHT BY FATHER, IS LOCATED Eulamae Gilbert, 12-year-old daughter of Homer Gilbert, 645 Arbor street, is living with her mother, Mrs. Gertrude Gilbert, 628 East Michigan street, Mrs. Gilbert said today. Gilbert Thursday appealed to The Times to locate the child, whom he said he has not seen for the last two years. Mrs. Gilbert was granted a divorce from Gilbert and custody of the child on April 9, 1929, by Superior Judge James M. Leathers. She denies that she took Eulamae from Gilbert’s home while he was at work, but merely obtained her custoday through a court order. Mrs. Gilbert said her former husband may see the child if he will get in touch with her. Deaths Charles Edgar Allinder. 77, 40 West Twenty-sixth, mitral regurgitation. John W. Byers. 51.
