THEY TELL ME
BY BEN STERN ALL is not, going well in the bailiwick of R. Earl Peters, Democratic state chairman, according to Ft. Wayne dispatches. These declare that Peters is “the ultimate target of tfoe exposure of methods used in the Allen county highway department” and that Democrats of the faction opposing his rule are/Joining with Republicans in the gunning. The fight hinges about the alleged petty graft operations and manipulations of one Clifford Siniff, appointed superintendent of county highways there in 1928. Siniff, now represented as being a Democrat, was one of the Ed Jackson crowd in Allen county in 1924, 1925, and 1926, and in the last named year was a candidate for state representative on the Republican ticket. Later, as a Republican, he was appointed to a job in the state highway department. Democrats of Allen county naturally resented his appointment as highway superintendent in 1928. None of the local politicians could figure why Democratic county commissioners would name a Republican to such an important position. a a a Shortly after taking the post, Siniff hopped on the Peters wagon. But with the charges of mismanagement, members of that group speedily kicked Siniff off and now he finds himself without a party. Whether Peters had anything to do with the Siniff appointment is
unknown and probably is question- | able but, beeause of this situation, ! political enemies of the state chairman are blaming him. Republicans making the attack are said to have the whole-hearted support of the Democrats out for ; Peters’ scalp and considerable importance is attached to the desertion of his standard by Sam Clelj land, county attorney, and Demo- : cratic county chairman, who was placed in that post by the Petersj McNabb group. nun Clelland is said to be a candidate for the Democratic nomination for United States senator and when a man with such an ambition breaks with the party leaders in his county, political observers are prone to i believe that this group must be on i the wane. The entire situation in Allen county is involved, but if Clelland really has changed horses and intends to put up a fight to remain as county chairman, Peters and his group are in for an unpleasant spell, which may result in his losing the support of his county in the fight for a district chairman whose vote is necessary to re-elect the state chairman. Party leaders of the state are watching closely the result of the Allen county factional war, for it will carry much significance in the coming campaign. MacDonald’s efforts to seek reelection in the constituency in which the labor executive asked him to resign from parliament was regarded by many quarters as political suicide. Since I had this opinion of low-priced furniture, I asked why — ’ —“One said that, since the present conditions, it had been necessary for her to shop around more than before. She said that she had not found values anywhere to equal those at the Ideal. —“Another spoke up and said she had bought all of her furniture at the Ideal since they had started ‘Cut-Price’ selling. She told me she had saved as much on ‘Cut-Price’ furniture at the Ideal as she saved by buying groceries at the ‘Cut-Price’ grocery t stores. -—“Both of them are exceptional thrifty, also they are excellent judges of furniture values and I know that they buy nothing that is not fully guaranteed.”
