POPE PBOTESTS SPANISH ACTION AGAINSTCHURCH ‘Repeated Offenses Aimed at Sacred Rights’ Are Hit by Pontiff. United Press VATICAN CITY, Oct. 16.—Pope Pius today ordered Monsignor Tedeschini, papal nuncio to Madrid, to protest energetically against “multiplied offenses inflicted against the sacred rights of the church,” in the recent action of the Spanish Cortes. He requested Tedeschini also to inform the Spanish cardinals, archbishops, bishops and priests and the faithful that the pontiff now, more than ever, shares the injuries, dangers, damages, and menaces they are bearing and may bear in the future. The pope announced he would dedicate the festival mass of Christ the King on Oct. 25 to Spain, pleading that God end the tribulation and inviting the faithful to pray. He expressed the hope that, “through the co-operation of good

Republican Spain drew further away from the Catholic church today when approval by the constitutional assembly of a measure giving equal rights to all religions in Spain. Controversy over the separation of church and state and restrictions on religious orders caused the resignation of the first provisional president of the republic, Niceta Alcala, who was succeeded by his minister of war, Manuel Azana. Members of the government believed that relations with the Vatican ould be smoothed out and that the papal nuncio would not leave Spain, due to the provisions of the new religious laws. Hupp Makes Plant Change DETROIT. Oct. 16.—A1l Hupmobile automobiles will be manufactured in Detroit after Dec. 1, according to announcement by the Hupp Motor Car Corporation. In the past the company’s six cylinder cars have been made at Cleveland, and the eights here. The Cleveland pjant will continue as a body producing unit for Hupp.

Decked out in anew suit of clothes —his first in more than a year— Sam Lockett, “the good neighbor,” packed a well-worn suitcase today, preparatory to going on a free trip to Chicago for a free plastic surgery operation—all tendered to him because he forgave the man who cut off the end of his nose. Lockett bought the new suit, costing s2l, from money that Knoxville citizens gave him because of his magnanimous act. He will leave here early Saturday in the automobile of his friend, Ed McNew, for Chattanooga, where he will take free passage contributed by American Airways on one of its passenger planes to Chicago, via Cincinnati.

Andre Citroen Repays Call President Once Made on Him. By Scripps-Hotcard Newspaper Alliance WASHINGTON. Oct. 16.—Andre Citroen, French automobile manufacturer, whose diminutive cars are as popular in France as Henry Ford’s are in the United States, has repaid a social obligation to dent Hoover, with a visit to the White House this week. A few years after the war. when Citroen just was getting into his mass production strides, Herbert Hoover called on him in Paris and was conducted through his plant. While in the United States Citroen is going to pay some additional courtesy calls. He is going to Detroit to visit Ford's factories, and the General Motors plants. “The automobile industry has not slumped in France as it has in this country,” Citroen said. “Our pro-

HANNAGAN WILL BE BRIDEGROOM Publicity Writer to Marry New York Girl. Steve Hannagan, writer and publicity director for the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and noted sport king of the nation, will be married nrtet week to Miss Ruth Ellery of New York. The couple was en route to Lafayette. Ind., today to visit Hannagan’s mother before the wedding. Hnnnagan is a native of the northern Indiana city. He is known to thousands of Indianapolis race fans and newspaper men as the wearer of checked caps whose appearance in the city each spring means the 500-mile speed classic is just around the corner. Recently Hannagan wrote a senes of sports stories for magazines based on his experiences during his years as a publicity man. He has written publicity for Miami Beach. Fla., Jack Dempsey, Gar Wood and Gene Tunney.
