NEW GASOLINE IS INTRODUCED ' BY STANDARD Product of Indiana Firm Is Changeable With the Seasons. By Timra Special CHICAGO, Oct. 16.—Indiana Is heralding today, In large newspaper ads, the new gasoline which the Standard Oil Company of Indiana is introducing—a gasoline changing with the seasons. Characteristics of the gasoline, officials of the company reevaled, will not be fixed permanently, but will be varied on a pre-arranged schedule to fit the season and the locality. In winter, the gasoline will be manufactured so as to contain a high percentage of volatile elements to aid quick starting and acceleration and in summer these elements will be kept to the practicable minimum in order to prevent “vapor lock," which often interrupts the smooth flow of gasoline to engines on hot days. The summer gasoline also will have a still higher antiknock specification, as that feature is more important in hot weather. System Is Worked Out Engineers long have recognized the desirability of varying gasoline in this fashion, but difficulties of changing stocks at centers of distribution have discouraged adoption of the idea. Standard of Indana now has worked out a system of seasonal distribution and has perfected it even to the extent that points to the north will have their fall and winter gasoline earlier than points to the south because of the earlier arrival of cool or winter weather. In addition to containing a greater proportion of the volatile elements that make for easier starting and quicker warming up, the gasoline will have an end-point about 20 degrees lower. This lower end-point aids complete vaporization in the manifold of the automobile engine and minimizes crank case dilution in cold weather. The anti-knock rating of the gasoline also has been improved substantially. Adopts New Policy More attention will be paid to this factor in summer than at present. It is not planned however, to have the new gasoline approach the very high anti-knock rating of the company’s ethylized gasoline. It is interesting to note that in calling the new product “Standard Red Crown” the company is adopting a policy of emphasizing the word “Standard” as a brand name for gasoline. Many thousands of dollars will be spent by the company in changing service station signs and billboards as the result of this change in product name. DAWES GETS PEEVED Careful Talk Is Necessary and Ambassador Just Cusses. By United Preaa OMAHA, Oct. 16.—The pet peeve of Charley Dawes is that he now has to be careful about what he says, due to the unsettled condition of world affairs, according to Charles DeLamatre, Omaha attorney, who was house guest of the ambassador to the court of St. James this summer. The ambassador reads all his speeches from manuscript and cusses because he no longer can speak extemporaneously, DeLamatre reported on his return home last week.
