house rule is balanced on OHIO ELECTION Wisconsin Vote Again Gives G. 0. P. Temporary and Shafty Majority. •#.’/ f' r ripp*-]{oicnrd Srtcupaper Alliance WASHINGTON, Oct. 16.—With election of Thomas R. Amiie of Wisconsin to the house of representatives this week, the Republican party again has obtained a temporary and shaky majority in that body. However, not until Nov. 3, will the final returns be in on party strength and even after that, the totals may be changed by death. Amlie’s election gives the Republicans 215 seats, while the Democrats have 214 and the Farmer-Labor party, one. Five representatives still are to be elected at the general November elections. Three of the men whose deaths caused the existing vacancies were Republicans and two were Democrats. Two of the first group virtually are certain to again elect Republicans, and the second group almost certainly will re-elect Democrats. Therefore, control of the house will depend on the election in one district, and that district is the one represented for many years by the late Speaker Nicholas Longworth. Both Democratic and Republican parties will concenrate their attention on this portion of Ohio during the next two weeks. If the Republicans win, that party will have 218 members in the house, the Democrats will have 216, and the Farmer Labor party one. It will be in the power of the liberal Republicans to organize the house and demand whatever concessions they see fit in the way of rules and legislation. On the other hand, if the Democrats win in Longworth’s district each major party will have 217 members and the balance of power will lie with Representative Paul Kvale, Farmer-Laborite, and secondarily with the liberal Republicans. VISITORS TO NATIONAL PARKS SET NEW MARK 3,152,845 Attendance This Year Is Gain of 14 Per Cent, Alt/ K<rippn-H award Xetcspaper Alliance WASHINGTON, Oct. 16.—Revised statistics on national park travel for the tourist season to Sept. 30 reveal that all records for attendance in the national parks were broken this year. For the first time travel passed the 3,000,000 mark, with a total patronage amounting to 3,152,845 visitors. Yosemite National Park led the list. This was an increase of 14 per cent over the previous record, attained last year. Due to heat and unfavorable road conditions, travel to the national monuments, according to Park Director Horace M. Albright, fell off this year. Most of these reservations, which are smaller in extent than the parks, are located in the southwest. The loss was offset by the increased travel to the parks. All told, 3,544,856 people patronized the combined parks and monuments this year as against 3,246,656 in 1930. This was a gain of about 9 per cent.
