MINISTERS JOIN IN EVANGELICAL WORK PROGRAM Total Number of Churches to Take Part Now Is Ninety-Eight. With six more pastors having significed their intentions of cooperating with the Church Federation of Indianapolis in evangelical work to be carried out during the week o$ Oct. 18, the total number of churches to take part in the movement now is ninety-eight. Dr. Guy Black of Greencastle will conduct the series of meetings for laymen on methods of carrying out visitation work among both members and non-members. The revised and complete schedule for group meetings follows: Downtown—First Baptist church at 2 o clock. Monday and Wednesday. North Side—Tabernacle Presbyterian church, Tuesday and Thursday at 2. Irvington-Tuxedo Group—Tuxedo Baptist church, Monday at 7:30: Irvington M E. church (supperi 6:15 Wednesday. West Side—West Michigan M. E. church Sunday at 3. Tuesday at 7:45. Northwest Group—Seventh Christian church, Monday and W’ednesdav at 10 a. m. Garfield Park—Olive Branch Christian church. Tuesday and Thursday at 10. Woodruff Group—East Tenth Street Methodist church. Tuesday and Thursday at 7.45. South Side—Second Reformed church, Monday. Tuesday. Wednesday and Thurs-. day at 7:45. West Washington Group—West Washington Presbyterian church. Monday and Wednesday at 3:30. West Indianapolis—West Morris Street Christian churcn, Tuesday and Thursday at 3:30. Additional churches to take part are First United Lutheran, St. Mark's Lutheran, Bethlehem Lutheran, Second Christian, University Park Christian and Memorial Presbyterian. PUBLIC HOLDS FATE OF GANGLAND, CLUB TOLD Ballots Only Lethal Answer to Bullets, Rotarians Hear. Public ballots are the only lethal answer to gangland’s bullets, in Chicago or any other American city, C. Ray Hansen, Chicago attorney and former investigator, told the Rotary Club at its weekly luncheon Tuesday in the Claypool. “Gangland met defeat at the polls last April in Chicago,” Hansen said, “only because great numbers of respectable people voted.” The law is powerless against gangland until all public officials array themselves with it against public enemies, he said, citing as an example the use of habeas corpus writs by gangsters’ lawyers with such effect that on one occasion a writ was at a police station before police arrived with their prisoner. KANE PLANS DEFENSE Cousin to Be Attorney at Trial for Wife Drowning. By United I‘ress KANE, Pa., Oct. 14.—His cousin, E. Kent Kane, Bradford (Pa.) attorney, will head the defense for Professor Elisha Kent Kane when he goes on trial at Hampton, Va., charged with drowning his wife Jenny, it was announced today. The University of Tennessee professor of romance languages will turn to his kinsman rather than accept any of the offers from prominent attorneys who have proffered their services. ASKS FREIGHT PERMITS City Firm Petitions for Authority to Run 12 Motor Lines. The Store Door Delivery Corporation, Indianapolis, filed twelve petitions with the public service commission Tuesday seeking authority to operate motor freight lines throughout Indiana. The proposed routes are: Indianapolis to New Albany; Indianapolis to Madison: Indianapolis to Attica; Indianapolis to Harrison, O.; Indianapolis to Evansville; Indianapolis to Hammond; Indianapolis to Lawrenceburg; Peru to Ft. She may play in an American production. JOINS RATE FIGHT E. New York Street League Lends Support. East New York Street Civic League will aid civic clubs in the fight for revision of utility rates. Samuel Harriz has been elected delegate to co-operate with the central committee of South Side civic clubs. He will attend the meeting tonight at 6 in Garfield Park community house. A delegation, headed by the Rev. L. C. E. Fackler, will assist the Indianapolis Federation rs Community Civic Clubs in its study of rates of Indianapolis utilities. The league also voted to sponsor a campaign for reduction of bus fares. It was claimed that many property owners pay as much as $lO more each month because of bus rates. The league will ask that bus fares be lowered to the rate charged in street cars. SCHOOL PARTY FRIDAY “Ugly Man“ Contest to Feature Shortridge High Event. First all-school party for Shortridge high school pupils will be held at 2:30 Friday afternoon in the high school gymnasium. Feature of the affair will be an “ugly man's” contest. A ballot will be given with each 10-cent ticket. The committee in charge will name a group of candidates for the honor. Advertising plans for the party include a number of posters, which will be displayed throughout the school.
