FRANCE SHARES LAVAL'S THRILL OVER U. S. TRIP Premier Is as Excited as a Schoolboy as Hour of Leaving Nears. BY RALPH HEINZEN I,'nlted Pre.y Staff Corrnioondcnt PARIS, Oct. 14.-—France rapidly is becoming American-minded as Premier Pierre Laval prepares to sail by the French liner lie de France for New York on Friday, as France'3 "traveling salesman," rather than as on ambassador of good will or international policy. It Is noticeable that for the first time since the war when Washington voted to cast America’s lot with the allies, France really is paying serious attenti6n to the United States. As one of the signs of the times, prominent downtown libraries are displaying geographies with their pages opened to maps of the American states. There Is general editorial satisfaction that Laval is going to America, and there is an editorial prayer that Senator William Borah will cross the premier’s path so that he can be converted to French theories. Wants Little Formality Laval is preparing for his voyage wtih the enthusiasm of a schoolboy on the eve of a holiday. Until July, he never had been outside of France in his life. He thoroughly enjoyed his brief visit to London and recently made his second foreign trip to Berlin. He will realize the dream of a lifetime when he sails for America. The French premier insists that he is traveling like a salesman with his portfolio filled with graphs and statistics with which he hopes to "sell” France to President Hoover. He has insisted in instructions to Ambassador Claudei, who has rejoined the French embassy in Washington that he desires a chance to see as much of America as six'days will permit and has asked for the least possible formalities. May Visit Chicago Laval has let the embassy arrange the program. He still has high hopes of being ’able to accept the invitation of the Chicago Association of Commerce to visit Chicago. The premier will be accompanied by a very small suite, with no experts of any kind. He will take with him a few young members of the French diplomatic service who > have been picked for a good speaking knowledge of English and good athletic build. The party will leave Paris at 9:08 a. m. Friday and will board the lie de France soon after noon. The liner will leave late Friday afternoon for Plymouth and New' York, being due to arrive in America on Oct. 22.

GIFFORD TO BE INVITEDTO CITY Hoover’s Job Aid Chief Is Sought for Address. Walter S. Gifford, chairman of the Hoover unemployment commission, will be invited to address a mass meeting on unemployment relief at Cadle tabernacle Oct. 26, it was announced today by Dr. John W. Hewitt, executive secretary of the Governor’s committee on unemployment relief. Plans for the meeting were made by Hewitt following adoption of the Muncie plan of making work, by a group of business and community leaders from throughout the state Tuesday. Other speakers at the mass meeting will include Fred S. Croxton, vice-president of the Hoover commission; William E. Price, founder of the Muncie plan; Governor Harry G. Leslie and Elmer W.
