DISFIGURED MAN WINS FREEDOM FOR ASSAILANT Farmer Pleads With Judge to Free Friend Who Knifed Him. By United Brent KNOXVILLE, Tenn., Oct. 14. 6am Lockett, 39-year-old farmer, with a gash necessitating twentytwo stitches in his cheek and the end of his nose cut off, pleaded in city court for acquittal of. his friend, Charlie Pratt, his assailant in the knifing. Lockett, a handsome man before the quarrel, will be disfigured for life, physicians say. His face was swathed in bandages as he appeared in court Tuesday. “I don't want to prosecute him, Judge,” he said to City Judge Williams. "Wp have known each other for years and have always been friends. This was only a family ; affair. He told me he didn't knew what he was doing. Walk Out Together "He has a wife and four children and I know he cant spare the money or time a charge like this would cause him.” “Then you want him turned loose?” the court asked. “Yes, your honor,” Lockett replied. If such neighborly love falls to your lot, let not the court refuse mercy,” Judge Williams ruled, turning to Pratt. The two men walked out of the room together. Outside the door, Pratt wept. Tragedy Preceded Fight Tragedy preceded the quarrel between the men. Lockett and his wife separated last Friday, the husband retaining custody of their two boys, .Henry, 10, and Clarence, 13. “Pratt allowed my wife to store some of her household goods at his home,” Lockett said, describing the quarrel. "I resented this, and said so. Then he came at me with a knife. “I figured it was all over and I would be marked for life anyway, no matter what they did to Pratt, so what was the use of sending him to jail?” Offered New Nose B // United Brest ATLANTA, Ga„ Oct, 14.—Sam Lockett can have anew nose, free of surgeon’s charges, if he can manage to pay some slight hospital expense, Dr. Emmett De Witt Highmith, plastic surgeon -of Atlanta, ; said here today. “The story of the Knoxville man i whose ‘neighborly love’ moved him j to free the man who cut off the j end of the nose in a fight appeals j to me,” Dr. Highsmith told the United Press. The Knoxville News-Sentinel, a Bcripps-Howard newspaper, in an editorial today appealed for some plastic surgeon to “match Sam Lockett’s unselfishness by giving him free service.” Almost before the editorial could be printed, the appeal was communicated to Dr. Highsmith by the United Press, and his immediate acceptance obtained. Volunteers Services Bn t. nited Bress CHICAGO, Oct. 14.—Dr. Max Thorek, surgeon-in-chief of the American hospital, volunteered his services free of charge today to restore Sam Lockett's face to normal if possible. “If Lockett can get to Chicago,” Dr. Thorek said, "I’d be happy to do the best I can for him and co-op-erate with the Knoxville Ne\ysSentinel to ‘match Sam Lockett’s unselfishness by giving him free service.’ ”
