Average of twenty rails 54.69. up 4.57. Average of twenty utilities 41.62 up 3 06. Average of forty bonds 86 59. up .51. BY ELMER C. WALZER United Pres* Financial Writer NEW YORK, Oct. 9.—Firmer money rates as a result of the rise from I' 2 to 2 ’.2 per cent in the New York Federal Reserve bank rediscount brought some unsettlement into financial markets today. The stock market turned irregular in the afternoon. Before that, it was featured by a sharp rise in the railroad shares, part of which was ; held. Industrials failed to follow up this gain and the leaders sagged oif. The same could be said of the utilities. So mam* far-reaching events occurred in the last twenty-four hours that Wall Street was reticent about making hasty appraisals of their value. A feature was a rise in call money from the recently prevailing figure I of l'.A per cent to 2 per cent. To- j day was the first time call money loaned at 2 per cent since last | April 16. Time Money Unchanged Time money rates held un- i changed, but bankers’ acceptance | rates rose G of 1 per cent and com- : rncrcial paper advanced. Following the action of the New York federal reserve bank, the Bank of France raised its discount rate to 2\> per cent, placing that country on a basis relatively unchanged from where It was before the New York bank increased its rate. This means that gold can continue to flow to France from this country. The street was not certain about the effects of higher money. However, the general opinion was it would be beneficial to banks and j this in turn would have a good | effect on business. Bank stocks re- • fleeted this feeling and made sub- 1 stantial gains on top of their.rise; Thursday after the l'ediscount rate rise was announced. The rise in rails was spirited for i a time. Buying was brought into i this group on the assumption some- | thing would be done to relieve the ! carriers which have been hard j pressed of late. No definite pro- i gram for aiding railroad bonds has I been forthcoming so far, but some j action was looked for from the ad- j ministration at Washington. Rate Action Expected In adidtion the street expected eaily favorable action on the freight rate increase request, and rumors of wage reductions which would increase profits also contributed to the j buying impetus. At one time, the carriers were up 1

FUTURES MAKE FURTHER GAINS IN FIRM TRADE Steady Buying Meets Dips in Wheat Pit; News Bullish. BY HAROLD E. RAIXVILLE United Press Staff Correspondent CHICAGO, Oct. 9. Aggressive buying met all dips in wheat on the Board of Trade today and the mari ket held around V 4 to * 3 cent higher most of the session. The larg--1 cst speculative interest in some time : was apparent with strong commission house buying. Profit taking and easiness in stocks gave the market a sharp dip shortly after the opening, but strength abroad and the Russian situation offset this. Corn Options Rally Corn rallied with wheat, but was draggy slightly above the previous close on profit-taking sales. Oats were firm and held steady. Provisions were a shade higher on covering. Liverpool held the greater part of its gains and closed 1 to 1% cents higher. Liverpool reports tend to confirm the drying up of exports out of Russia and this is regarded as highly beneficial to the American export trade. Cash prices were unchanged. Receipts were 46 cars. Oats Trade Uneven Favorable weather over the belt sent corn prices fractionally lower ! at the start with many overnight ' selling orders. Locals bought and | the firmness in wheat brought about a recovery to around Thursday’s closing levels. Cash prices were to V 2 cent higher. Receipts were 270 cars. Oats moved up and down with the action in the other pits, but held unchanged to Vs cent higher early. There was nothing in the news and trade ruled light. Cash prices were unchanged. Receipts were 34 cars. New York Curb Market (By Thomson & McKinnon) —Oct. 9 Close.' Close.
