BUTLER GRIDMEN BATTLE BALL STATE ELEVEN TONIGHT

Sun Beau Quits Turf After Rich Triumph Champion American Money Winner Retired by Willis Sharpe Kilmer After Victory Over Mate in $25,000 Hawthorne Race: Earnings Total $376,744. BY ARCH EDDY, Unit'd Pre*s Stiff Correspondent CHICAGO, Oct. 9.—01d Sun Beau has gone to the post for the last time. No more will he thrill turf followers with his magnificent drive down the stretch. Gone is me training grind, the traveling in railroad cars and the nervous excitement of taking his place at the post. The turf world’s greatest money winner was made ready today for his last train ride. A ride that will take him to the green pastures of Willis Sharpe Kilmer’s Virginia breeding farm. There he can spend the rest of his life in the leisure befitting a champion. He ran his last race Thursday when he won the $25,000 added Hawthorne Gold Cup for the third consecutive time. The purse boosted his winnings to a total of $376,744.

To leave no doubt of his greatness in the minds of the 18,000 spectators, Sun Beau ran in front nearly all of the way and clearly outclassed Mate, A. C. Bostwick’s 3-year-old which rates as technical champion of his age because he has beaten Twenty Grand in two out of three starts this season. Plucky Play finished third and Jim Dandy, the famous mud runner, last. The time was 2:05 for the mile and a quarter. It was the first time since Exterminator won the Saratoga Gold Cup in 1919, 1920, and 1921 that a horse has won the same stake race three times running. Sun Beau won three other equally rich purses in Chicago this season. They were the Arlington Cup, the Arlington Handicap and the Lincoln Handicap. The champion was given a masterful ride by Jockey Johnny Maiben who drove to victory in the race once before. He rode Display when that horse won the first running of the race in 1928. Sun Beau was given a prolonged ovation when he crossed the line, leading Mate by a length and a half. The spectators stood on their seats and cheered wildly. They continued their cheering while Trainer Jack Whyte threw a green and brown blanket over the champion and led him off to his stable on the back stretch. And to the music of that acclaim, Sun Beau began his retirement. GRIDDERS USE PLANES Army Warriors Fly to Game, Using Three Carriers. By United Press MT. CLEMENS, Mich., Oct. 9. Canada’s policy is jobs for all—dole for none. Relief for its 530,000 unemployed will be in the main a Government responsibility. The dole is being avoided to the maximum degree by the undertaking of widespread public works, one of which will be a Trans-Canada highway which will stretch from British Columbia in the West to Nova Scotia in the East. tt I tt tt A note of encouragement comes from the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the Department of Commerce. The Wholesale Commodity Index kept by the Bureau shows four months of price stability—the largest interlude in the decline of commodity prices in more than two years. That means in ordinary language that prices are scraping bottom and the next turn should be upward. tt u u You get cheerfulness out of life in proportion as you put cheerfulness in. You cannot invest counterfeit coin and expect dividends in real money. a u The new high counter we have installed caused one customer to remark that it reminded him of old times. Only the footrest was lacking. We believe he forgot the most important item. Remember you are always welcome to the free tire and battery service we render on the Service Court. A Service Buddy will be glad to put air in your tires, ad distilled water to the battery, etc. A little precaution often saves a big replacement bill. e tt The Chief Tire Changer ROSE TIRE CO., Inc. 365 fc.
