21 MURDERS ON ROUGE RECORDS ARE UNSOLVED Orme and McGrail Killing Among Most Brutal of Decade. 'This the flmt o 1 a series of three stories on twenty-one unsolved murders In Indianapolis since Dec. 29. 1921.) A scream that pierced the still darkness surrounding a little laundry at 210 West Maryland street the night of Dec. 29, 1921, was heard by no one. The sound faded in the distance. One fact remained the next morning—George Bang, a Chinese laundryman, hack been murdered. His body was found in the cold room. He had been strangled to death and his head crushed with a stove poker. But his murderer never was brought to justice". None of Others Neither have the murderers of twenty other persons in Indianapolis since the night George Bang was slain. He is the only laundryman to be slain. But there are others, a former tennis star, several policemen, and a doctor, all of whom probably occupied higher pinnacles in life and society than George Bang. In going through the flies at police headquarters The Times has learned that sensational murder cases of their time nearly have been forgotten. And perhaps the slayers have forgotten, too. At least, in these twenty-one cases, no record exists to show that the law has made any marked progress toward their detection. Shot Serving City Those twenty-one cold-blooded slayings are only part of the murders in less than a decade. Numerous Negro murders have occurred, but only one is recorded in this story; that of a policemen shot in serving the city. After the slaying of George Bang, there were no unsolved killings until that night of Nov. 16, 1922, when Hence Orme, noted amateur tennis player, and a girl companion were faced with bandit guns in a deserted part of the road at Forty-sixth street and Arlington avenue. Crime stepped from one side of his car and the girl was ordered from the other. In a struggle that followed, Orme was shot through a lung. He died Nov. 18, 1922; his slayer never was apprehended. In the next year and a half, four other murders occurred that stumped authorities. Physician Shot Down The most brutal of these was the slaying of Dr. Joseph McGrail, i prominent north side physician, who was shot as he resisted a holdup at the corner of Washington boulevard and Fifty-fourth streets, May 14, 1924. He had stepped from a Meridian Heights street car en route to his home a few blocks away. Instead of heeding the gunmen’s commands to raise his hands, Dr. McGraill resisted. The highwaymen shot him in the stomach. The only clew to the murderer was revolver found, in a sewer near the scene. The other murders were marked for the calm and brutal manner in which they were perpetrated. John Reinert, manager of the Allied Coal and Material Company, entered the Arm’s office in the 2100 block Northwestern avenue, Jan. 28, 1924. He was murdered by two Negro bandits who shot him in the back. Other slayings in that eighteenmonth period were those of Robert Watson, 19, a high school pupil, who was stabbed in the neck by a boy companion Oct. 16, 1923, and patrolman William Whitfield, Negro, who was shot in a running gun battle with a bandit suspect June 28, 1924, while the officer was on duty. He lived four months before the wounds proved fatal. In those months, his assailants were not caught and never have been. (To Be Continued) SLASHES VENUE PERIOD Judge Pickens Announces Time Is Cut to Only Five Days. Period for perfecting change of venues from superior court three was shortened Thursday by Judge William A. Pickens to prevent the delay of trials. Judge Pickens announced that “I will grant only five days, from the time the county is selected for change of a venue, for its perfection.” The practice has been to allow ten days or lonnger. "They are too many changes of venues taken for dilatory reasons; merely to delay trials.” Judge Pickens declared.
