CARRIER PIGEON 1 MAKES FLIGHT OF 2,000 MILES Returns to Long Island After Escaping in Venezuela. By V niter] Press NEW YORK, Oct. 9.—Carrier pigeon No. 1303, once owned by John P. Lehrer, of Elmont, L. i„ following the Instincts of his kind, flew home to Elmont when he found the door to his cote had been left open. That would be an unusual event for a carrier pigeon, under ordinary circumstances, but it so happens that the cote from which No. 1,303 escaped was along the Orinoco river, in Venezuela, something like 2,000 miles away. Number 1,303 had been taken to Caracas several months ago, in company with seven other carrier pigeons, by John Brophy, general manager in Venezuela for the Venezuela Speculating Company. t arried to Remote Section The company's searches for new oil land take men back into the bushy country of Venezuela over streams, lakes and mountains where sturdy burros are the only means of transportation. There is no telegraphic communication. Brophy thought carrier pigeons Would expedite messages so he had Charles Tetsold, Brooklyn optician whose hobby is pigeon racing, obtain an experimental four pair as the nucleus for a regular pigeon messenger service. Two of the birds escaped. Second Is Found Dead Later, Brophy told the * United Press, he was informed That, n, banded pigeon had been found dead near Caracas. Nothing more was heard of the other. But a few days ago, Lehrer, No. 1,303'8 former owner, chanced to see the bird he had believed to be far away, pecking away at his feed with the ordinary stay-at-homes. The bird did not seem to be especially tired. Now Tetsold. who obtained the bird from Lehrer for Brophy, says lie wants to get No. 1,303’s parents. Any pair that can breed a bird like that No. 1,303 certainly is worth having.” Injured in Fall From Elevation Apparently having fallen from the railroad elevation at Merrill street, Willie Moore, 66, of 432 West Norwood street, sustained a dislocated shoulder early today. He was found by a flagman and police said Moore had been drinking.

BY BEN STERN Definite evidence that the opposition to re-election of R. Earl Peters as state chairman and of the candidacy of Paul V. McNutt for Governor is not “getting anywhere,” at least so far, was reflected in the Democratic rally at Nashville Thursday. This meeting was rijonsoreti by the A. L. B. or Automobile License Branch Association. This is anew organization, which sprang full grown from the cunning brain of James Carpenter. Ostensibly formed to spread information among members concerning distribution of automobile license plates, it really is part of the political organization fostered by Secretary of State Frank Mayr Jr. Thursday’s rally on the Hilltop campgrounds just south of Nashville was their first big meeting and Democrats from the fifteen counties attended. It was held under the aegis of L. A. Smallwood of Oolitic, president of the association, active over the state in behalf of Mayr. Naturaly as it was an anti-Peters-McNutt rally, care had been exercised to invite only state officials not truly representative of this group, and congressmen of the district. But McNutt was present and was accorded an enthusiastic reception, and this showed the direction of the wind. > Realization that the “Mayr for Governor” boom has become a bursted bubble finally has dawned upon Mayr and his advisers, and their only hope Is to impede the nomination of McNutt. By accomplishing this, Montgomery and Ackerman may realize their ambition to control the Democratic state organization. The real gainer by the organization of the boom and the A. L. B. is, of course, Jim Carpenter, head of the state automobile license department, who is managing to build up a strong organization which can be turned to his own use, in event Mayr gets so far out on the Governor limb that he can’t pull back toward the berth of secretary of state. * Then Jim w’ill step in and attempt tc get the secretary nomination for himself. Carpenter has devoted a great deal of time (state paid) to building up the Mayr organization, so he naturally feels that he is the crown prince and heir apparent: But many a crown prince never became king.
