MURRAY SWEPT TO VICTORY ON ‘BAND WAGON' Sincerity and Frankness of ‘Alfalfa Bill’ Delights His Many Backers. Here U the second of a aerie* of three article* on the rantl amarine flrure tn American politic* at the preenl time —William H. (Alfalfa Bill) Murray, rovernor of Oklahoma. BY GEORGE B. ROSCOE. United Press Staff Correspondent OKLAHOMA CITY, Oct. B. It was on Aug. 24, 1929. A train pulled slowly to a stop at Tishomingo, old capital of the Chickasaw nation. William H. Murray, tanned and rugged from his open life on the Bolivian plains, alighted. He had tasted bitter defeat in his South American colonization plan and almost was penniless. Nevertheless, Tishomingo was out to greet him. Murray took off his hat and scratched his head speculatively. “The loyalty on all occasions of these people has puzzled me,” he said, “but this last greeting digs me in the ribs.” Clamored for Leadership This was the spark that rekindled the fire in the old political warhorse. Thousands of his friends clamored for his leadership in a trying economic period. Several weeks later,, reporters learned that the “Sage of Tishomingo” was in Oklahoma City. They found nim in his room, stretched on a bed, his shoes ofT in a corner. In a booming voice, Murray recounted tales of Bolivia, choice jokes, a bit risque, and the evils of the federal reserve system. ,Then he told of his determination to run for Governor. The band wagon movement swept him through the first primary and placed him in opposition to Frank Buttram, immaculately dressed, wealthy Oklahoma City oil man. A campaign of invective followed. Murray polled 134,355 votes, almost twice that given Buttram. Winning over his Republican opponent in the general election merely was routine. He Works Swiftly The election over, Murray was obliged to borrow S2OO to attend his inauguration. His father, the late Rev. Uriah Dow Thomas Murray, administered the oath of office. Oklahoma knew what kind of a Governor it had when the legislature convened. "Alfalfa Bill” delivered an ultimatum for tax reforms in his first message. He demanded rate reductions from public utilities, a tax on corporate income and incomes of those in the higher brackets. The legislature quickly enacted a law providing for his advocated tax commission but there their co-operate seemed to end. The session ended with several choice bills unpassed. Murray promptly served notice- he would “ring the fire bells” —a constitutional convention practice of attracting voters’ attention—and initiate the bills to popular vote later. That vote is due soon. “Alfalfa Bill” Explodes The oil problem faced Murray. He was unwilling U let it interfere with his tax reform program. He appointed a committee to probe the matter. The committee advocated repeal of the stat\ >roration laws. "Bah!” exploded Murray. “That committee is dominated by Harry Sinclair. They’re through—discharged. Call out the nMlitia!” That’s how Alfalfa BilPworks. NEXT: The audacity of one Mr. Murray. Lake County Issues Scrip 111 l I'llitl (I /’)T88 CROWN POINT, Ind., Oct. B. ART INSTITUTE TO LAUNCH CAMPAIGN Plans Made at Special Meeting Today for Drive for New Members, With 1,800 as Goal. (A PLANS were formulated this morning at a called meeting of John Herron Art institute staff members, Art Association President Woollen, and Junior League members for a short campaign for new members in the Art Association of Indianapolis. The campaign to be launched Oct. 12 for a week, under The auspices of the arts and interests committee of the Junior League, has a goal of at least 1,800 members. Forty young women, members of the Junior League, presented themselves this morning in answer to the call of Mrs. Louis Haerle, campaign manager, and chairman of the arts and interests committee.

Mr. Woollen described the project to them, and announced that generous commissions on the memberships obtained by the volunteer workers would be given them to apply on their earnings toward the $12,000 goal required for their occupational therapy work at the Riley Memorial Hospital for Children. “Advantages for members of the Art Association will be legion this winter," Mr. Woollen said. “Never before have we had so 'much to offer our members. New activities are opening up here that will include whole families.” John K. Bryan, recently appointed membership secretary of the Art Association, addressed the volunteers and pointed out that they were “not to seek donations, but investments for boh personal and civic reasons.” “This Is not a charity campaign,” Mr. Bryan said. “There are decided returns for money invested in the cultural advantages of a city. This is proved by the 37,000 visitors to the art museum each year, the 10.640 students, and the attendance figures for concerts, special courses, lectures, gallery talks and other advantages.” Wilbur D. Peat, director of the art institute, outlined a number of the advantages the museum and school have to ofTer. : Other speakers were Mrs. Haerle and Mrs. Annie S. Dawson, a member of the membership staff, who described methods of telephone solicitation. Working with Mrs. Haerle on the Art Association campaign will be Mrs. Anna Marie Gall-Sayles, campaign chairman, Mrs. Eugene Miller, treasurer, and team captains, Mrs. Theodore Griffith, Mrs. Robert Milliken, Mrs. Charles Weiss, Mrs. Charles Latham, and Miss Frances Hamilton. LABOR'S CURES FOR DEPRESSION AWAIUEBATE Proposals to Be Fought Out on Their Merits, Green Declares. BY DAN BOWERMAN United Press Staff Correspondent VANCOUVER, B. C., Oct. B.—All the necessary preliminaries were over today so 350 American Federation of Labor delegates plunged into the job of making known their plans for ending depression and restoring the prosperity of 1929. Except for resolutions which may be introduced by unanimous consent, all proposals on which the federation will ballot had been introduced and referred to committees. As fast as the committees report them, they will be taken up on the floor. The convention faced a showdown on proposals to wreck prohibition in one of three ways: By repealing the Volstead act, substituting state control for the eighteenth amendment, or amending the Volstead act to legalize 2.75 per cent beer only. Three plans for taking up unemployment slack by large scale public building were offered. One asks congress for $5,000,000,000, another for $10,000,000,000 and the third leaves the exact sum to congress. A number of resolutions—one of which must be chosen—demand the fiveday week and shorter working hours. Delegates have before them one resolution for exclusion of Filipinos, and two which would grant the

It also was reported today that a movement is under way to have representatives of other European powers visit Washington with Laval, or soon after his conversations with Mr. Hoover. *The presence of Lord Reading, British roreign secretary, in Paris for conferences with French officials before Laval departs for Washington indicates British interest in the premier's visit. The Italian ambassador, Count Manzoni, conferred with Laval and reportedly discussed the possibility of Dino Grandi, Italian foreign minister, visiting Washington. If Grandi visits Mr. Hoover, Lord Reading also would be invited to avoid slighting Britain. Such a development would constitute a British diplomatic victory.
