PYTHIANS OPEN 63RD ANNUAL STATE PARLEY Trip to Lafayette Home Featuies Opening of Knights’ Convention. The first step is the hardest. Knights of Pythias elections Wednesday morning for the office of grand outer guard, first step toward grand chancellorship, will be hotly contested. With three candidates—Harvey T. Walker, Montpelier lodge No. 188; Russell B. Dalrymple, Knightstown lodge No. 226, and Ernest J. Will, Washington lodge No. 94 of Michigan City—in the race, the result of the election is considered tp be much in doubt. This noon a trip to the Knights of Pythias home at Lafayette marked the opening day of the sixty-third annual state convention of the order in Indianapolis. Marching through downtown streets to parade tunes by the Hope lodge band of Jeffersonville and the D. O. K. K. uniformed band, more than 500 Pythians boarded special trains for the trip to the home. A resolution passed at the first grand lodge meeting this morning provided free transportation to representatives. Pythians returning to Indianapolis at 6; 20 tonight will parade from the union station to the Claypool where j, good-time session will be held. A program of music will be given hy the band from Hope lodge, No. 13, Jeffersonville. The Hope band was to lead the parade this noon from the K. of P. building to Union station. Following election of officers and business session Wednesday, Knights of Pythian grand lodge sessions will come to a close. The sixty-third annual state convention opened Monday with a bridge assembly of the uniform rank in the auditorium at Pythian building. Pythian Sisters will begin its forty-third annual meeting Thursday morning. Ladies of the order will be welcomed Wednesday night at an informal reception in the Denison hotel. Mrs. Nell C. McCurry, grand chief, of Goodland, and associate grand and past grand officers will preside at the reception. Order Stronger Gear By Scripps-Howard 'Newspaper Alliance WASHINGTON, Oct. 6.—The landing gear is the most vulnerable part of an airplane, and must be made stronger than at present, the aeronautics branch of the United States commerce department has decreed. During the last six months of last year statistics show that 34 out of a total of 44 structural failures, or 77 per cent of this class of accident, were caused by collapse of the landing gear. U. S. Pilots Organize By United Press CHICAGO, Oct. 6.—The nation's commercial air pilots have organized the Airline Pilots’ Association of America, it was announced today by David L. Behncke, newly elected president. The organization has affiliated itself with the American Federation of Labor. Its purposes were announced as follows: ‘'To stabilize the profession; insure the using of safe equipment, and competent pilots, and keep politics off the wing.” The pilots plan to maintain technical boards to examine equipment and personnel and to regulate hours of service. The organization already has a membership of about ■450 out of the 760 commercial pilots flying on air routes. Behncke paid. EIGHT-STATE - COAL~ PARLEY IS PLANNED {lndiana Expected to Send Delegates to Stabilization Session. IPy United Press CHARLESTON, W. Va., Oct. 6. A conference to discuss stabilization of the coal industry, which would Include representatives from eight states, was planned today by West Virginia coal operators following a pieeting with Governor Conley. A committee of three was named to arrange the consultation. Members are James D. Francis of Huntington. Howard W. Showalter of Fairmont and C. A. Cabell of Charleston. States which would be represented in the propwosed conference are West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Indiana, Virginia and Illinois. Delegates would be selected by the National Coal Association. ATHLETES WANT~~WINE V. S. Dry Law May Keep French Out of Olympic Games.
