WALZER United Press Financial Editor NEW YORK. Oct. 2.—The stock market went through another senes of ups and downs today. Around noon the list was rallying from the lows touched around the end of the first hour. Volume was lighter than recent sessions. The difference between today's market and those of other days this week is that prices at no time got below the previous closing levels. The opening was higher and a subsequent rise carried the list to heights 1 to 5 points above Thursday’s last prices. The reaction which followed failed to wipe out all the gain. Around noon prices in the general list were fractions to more than 2 points above the previous close and a firmer trend wa£ noted. Rail Shares Bid Up United States Steel was carried up to 73% in the early trading. From there it dropped to 71% and around noon it was back to 72%, up %. American Can ranged between 79% and 77% and around noon was at 78%, up 1%. At that time Auburn was at 100%, up 2% from the previous close and 2 points from the earlier low; Case, 40%, up %; Westinghouse Electric, 45, up %; Sears Roebuck, 34%, up 1%, and Radio, 13%, up %. Railroad shares were bid up fractions to more than a point. In early trading gains in this division were larger. Utility Issues Rally The- Street was favorably impressed with a statement from Washington that the interstate commerce commission was expected to sanction the four-party railroad consolidation. No official comment was forthcoming, however. Consolidated Gas led a rally in the utilities with a rise of 2 points to 68, after touching 66% in the early decline. Others of the group were up fractions to more than a point. General Motors got back into the billion dollar class. At its low yesterday of 22%, the 43,500,000 shares outstanding were valued at $978,750,000. At the noon price of 23%, the stock was back above a billion dollars at $1,001,375,000. In the Cotton Markets
(By Thomson & McKinnon) NEW YORK, Oct. I—Cotton sagged further into new lows today on lower cables and pressure of southern selling. The contracts were taken by the trade every point down. This process seems likely to continue so that further declines will be slow. Early weakness in ctocks was a factor. Market looks lower as hedge selling increases. NEW YORK High. Low. Close. STRONG GUYING SENDS FUTURE TRADESHIGHER Bullish Liverpool News Is Factor in Opening Gains. BY HAROLD E. RAIXVILLE United Press Staff Correspondent CHICAGO, Oct. 2.—Optimism over the Liverpool wheat report and the strong stock market tone was reflected in the Board of Trade today, where all grains opened with fractional gains. At the opening wheat was % cent to % cent higher; corn was up % cent to % cent, and oats were % cent to % cent higher. Wheat Gaining Strength The steadiness in wheat against the unfavorable tone of the stock and cotton markets is creating friends for the major grain, and there is some buying of wheat. The difference in exchange rate in sterling today led traders to assert that no export business can be expected until either the exchange rate is increased or American prices lowered. This pit was somewhat optimistic over the steadiness at Liverpool with consequent gains, and the better tone of the stock market. Corn Trade Firmer With the passing of the September delivery, corn now is firming up. The trade expects large shipments of the grain to market in view of the early maturity of the crop and the completed harvest. Considerable buying Thursday gave oats an independent tone, but this grain still is inclined to follow the trail of the others. Considerable attention is paid to the financial reports by traders in this pit. Chicago Grain Range —Oct. 2 WHEAT— Prev. High. Low. 11 00. close. Mitchell Race Is Off By United Press WASHINGTON, Oct. 2.— There will be on Mitchell trophy airplane race this year unless the army finds a way to seat the judges on stationary pylons a mile and half above the earth. This problem was presented because all of the army's new, highspeed pursuit planes are equipped with super-charged motors which can’t be thrown wide open, without damage, until they are 7,500 feet up in the air. The race may be held next year, as the army hopes by that time to have some fast, low-altitude planes. Republic Now Has Flier By United Press CURTISS AIRPORT, VALLEY STREAM, L.
