BUDGET SLASH BRANDED HELP FORJTILITIES Mayor Sullivan Hits Plan; Wants Special Session of Legislature. (Continued from Page One) more detail by William Book, secretary of the civic affairs committee, Book is opposed to firing employes and thus increasing poor relief, however. Miessc Offers Plan This program is proposed by /Harry Miesse of the Indiana Tax- / payers’ Association. He would use those receiving poor relief for work on parks and boulevards, instead of the present paid employes. Mayor Sullivan countered this . proposal by pointing out that this form of labor had been tried and found inefficient and to fire laborers regularly employed merely would increase the poor relief burden. Miesse advocated reduction in commodity purchase budgets of $lO,900; SIOO,OOO each from the street and park budgets; $105,000 from the city hosiptal, and that the utility district and municipal airport levies be entirely eliminated. This idea of crippling the city’s plans for public ownership of gas and possibly other utilities drew particular Are from the mayor. Mayor Points Out ‘Farce’ Citing the fact that H. S. Morse, manager of the Indianapolis Water Company, was a member of the Chamber of Commerce budget cutting committee, the mayor declared, not mentioning Morse by name: “This man Is an affable and charming gentleman to meet socially. But we lopped off $150,000 of payments to the water company. He is loyal to his concern. To have euch members on the Chamber of Commerce makes the whole thing a farce.” Book defended the committee membership and Sullivan replied that he didn’t intend to let the water and light companies dictate the city budget. In closing ’he pointed out that the tax board members couldn’t cut the state rate and he appreciated their efforts. “I hope you will appreciate ours,” he concluded, “and realize that a special session of the legislature and new tax laws offer the only adequate solution. You men should join in urging this action as a matter of patriotism in the present crisis.” STUDENT HELD "FORGER Professed Notre Dame Man Held In Note Fraud. Pit United Vn-KK HOUSTON, Tex., Oct. 1. John Russell Maynard, who said he was a student at Notre Dame, today was held for South Bend authorities on a charge of forging a note for SSOO in order to complete his college education. Three other students took the same method of paying expenses at Notre Dame last year, he is said to have told detectives.
