PUBLICITY FOR PETTIS' SALE IS EXTENSIVE October Anniversary Event Widely Advertised by City Store. While merchandising preparations for the Pettis Dry Goods Company celebration of Its great seventyeighth anniversary sale began months ago, the publicity program was not started until six weeks ago, but a comprehensive outline for keeping the public informed of the event then was completed and recently executed. Many thousands of copies of a large broadside circular were distributed today to Indianapolis and vicinity homes, in addition to those reached by The Times regularly. When the job was finished more than 100,000 families had been apprised of the New York Store’s big birthday sale, which opens Thursday morning. Thousands of package inclosures telling of the event’s approach were inserted in all outgoing parcels during last week. And many thousands of bright-hued stickers, heralding the coming of the sale, were affixed to packages not wrapped in the various departments and sent out to delivery trucks Radio announcements likewise have been conveying news of the seventy-eighth Anniversary Sale to listeners within hundreds of miles of the city. Every type of sign, printed, painted, electric and huge new Neon-tube innovation will be devoted to exploiting the great thrift event, too. Telephone calls, post cards, personal letters, all forwarded to their friends and customers by employes are assisting to carry the message which eager thousands will receive gladly, for the Pettis’ Company store anniversary sale is traditional for

Because of the wide scope of the sale, it annually appeals to residents of towns and villages up and down the entire state and October Ist is really synonomous with a reunion of friends and relatives from city and country at Pettis’. Pleasure, and Profit For many families, the opening of the anniversary sale provides the real opportunity to combine shopping trips and pleasurable meetings with out of town cousins and friends. The social aspects of this opportunity are by no means magnified and the interested observer will find scores of shoppers mingling at luncheon and renewing friendly ties. As result of this, or rather as a forethought, the Pettis’ newly opened basement case will be operated by an especially large staff Thursday and right through the sale in order to afford prompt, courteous service which characterizes serving of excellent viands at this popular eating place. By steady and consistent use of publicity for its anniversary events as well as throughout the entire business year, the Pettis store has been expanded from the little shop in the old-time Bates block, Illinois and Washington streets, to the large six-story structure of today. $87.14 on First Day The first day the actual receipts in the Pettis original store totaled $87.14. Then there were but two employes. During the coming sale the staff of co-workers will be hun- j dreds of times the original number and business expected for opening day should be close to SIOO,OOO. There were but 700 square feet of floor space in the first Pettis shop, while the structure today, including warehouses and garage, has almost ten acres of floor space. The number of men and women and their dependents whose livelihood is provided by the Petttis store is close to 2,000, or the population of a small modern suburban community.—Advertisement.

CRYSTAL STUDIO GROWS POPULAR Pettis-WKBF Unit on Fourth Floor Draws Crowds. “I’ll meet you at the Crystal Studio,” is the oft-repeated expression among feminine shoppers nowadays, and if you happen to be one of the few who has not paid a visit to the very popular meeting place of friends from both city and country prior to and after shoppings tours, it is time you join this everincreasing group. Early in the last summer, PettisWKBF crystal studio was created on the fourth floor of the Washington street store, in the foreground of the furniture department. A beautiful studio, handsomely draped and elaborately furnished, with all the modern broadcasting equipment, is the result of the vision of the station’s founders. Robert B. Gable, president of the Pettis firm, established one of the first broadcast studios to be operated under the roof of a department store. It is station WFBG, located at Altoona, Pa., in the William F. Gable Company department store. Mr. Gable is an ardent radio enthusiast an long has been identified with the industry in a prominent manner. When opportunity presented itself the Pettis president was prompt to ally himself with the opening of the store’s crystal studio in conjunction with the popular local station, WKBF. Through its publicity the general public constantly is invited to see and hear a radio program broadcast from the fourth-floor studio. Outside the studio are located comfort-giving chairs and divans where one may rest and be entertained while waiting to join friends in other appointments. Programs are broadcast daily from the Pet-tis-WKBF studio at 9:15, 11 a. m. and 4:30 and 5 p. m. Countless people have listened to programs sent to the air, but few of the great majority get the opportunity to see and hear the ac al broadcast simultaneously.—Adv.
