They have been carefully trained during the last few days and the firm will make every effort to provide satisfactory service throughout the great month-long sale, and particularly during the peak-day selling on Thursday. Many out-of-town residents expect to be in attendance Anniversary Day, and the additional shopping time of three and a half hours will likewise be a boon to people employed by day and unable to make their purchases until the close of their own regular duties. Not a few patrons have requested that the store remain open during the evening of the initial day of the Anniversary Sale, so the executives decided to comply with this suggestion this year as a matter of public convenience.—Adv. ADVERTISEMENT. OPEN HOUSE WILL START PETTIS’ FETE
Tonight is going to be a historymaking night at the Pettis’ Dry Goods Company’s store because another birthday has rolled around with the calendar and it brings the annual “open house” or public reception which long has characterized the auspicious beginning of the New York Store’s anniversary observance. From 7:30 to 10 o’clock the whole store wilf be ready to receive and entertain its guests. Preparations for handling almost 50,000 visitors have been consummated and even this number may be exceeded when the populace learns of the numerous attractions provided for its entertainment. Refreshments to Be Served Prom 7:30 until 8:30 p. m. visitors will be served delicious orange drink on the street floor without charge. Between the same hours Ballard’s delightful ice cream is to be given away at the basement restaurant. Pettis’ now famous frozen custard which has won so many friends since its inaugural last month will likewise be distributed to the guests from 8:30 to 10 p. m. On the main floor, samples of voiletries and other items from a large number of manufacturers are to be given women visitors as favors. This has long been a favored anniversary custom at the Pettis store and will be continued again this year. Tracy Cox to Be Present One of the popular features planned by the program committee for the benefit of the men who join the throng of visitors is the personal appearance of Tracy Cox, well-known local pugilist. He will be in the men’s clothing department, extreme rear of the men’s section, main floor of the store, and will broadcast a program as well from that point of vantage. A large and comprehensive exhibit of merchandise bought at the Pettis store in 1853 and up through the “gay nineties” to the present day will be situated on the second floor and is expected to attract widespread attention. Photographs of downtown streets and buildings in the early days of the city will form a rather intriguing display on the third floor. What is destined to be the great feature of the evening is the formal dedication of the Pettis-WKBF crystal studio on the fourth floor. Ceremonies will begin there at 7:30 and from shortly after that hour until 8:30 Connie’s orchestra will provide some of its inimitable tunes. Jimmy Boyer is to appear in the studio from 8 to 8:15 o’clock and promises to have some new and inviting selections for his large list of followers over the air. Tracy Cox’ broadcast from the men’s cjothing shop comes at 8:15 to 8:30. This will be followed by
the broadcasting of Pettis’ anniversary fashion promenade to be staged on the second floor. From 9 to 9.30 the Wilking music period will bring some pleasing diversion. At 9:30 to 9:45, Harry Bason and his popular band appear on the third floor. Connie’s orchestra returns to broadcast from the studio from 9:45 to 10 o’clock, when Charlie and Jerry will be heard in some joyous numbers. Again, from 10:15 to 10:30, Harry Bason’s band will entertain, followed by Connie's orchestra from 10:30 to 11 p. m. The Wa-Da Trio appears at the studio of WKBF from 11 to 11:15 o’clock when the Rhythm Boys entertain in a quarter hour program, and at 41:30 Connie’s orchestra returns to the air with a final offering of pleasing numbers. Appropriate souvenirs are to be distributed to all visitors to the Pettis’ crystal studio during the evening. Throughout the five-hour program interesting announcements relative to a real anniversary party for the public will be made and they will prove to be decidedly worth - while .—Adv. EMPLOYES AGEIST 500 Pettis Workers Are Luncheon Guests. Nearly 500 regular and extra employes of the Pettis Dry Goods Company store gathered at the store restaurant Monday evening and shared a buffet luncheon which preceded a rally incident to the forthcoming celebration of the firm’s seventy-eighth anniversary that will open Thursday morning with a month-long sale. Karl S. Isenberg, sales promotion manager and general superintendent, presided at the rally in lieu of W. Stanley Truby, general merchandise manager, who suffered a severely sprained ankle during the day. Several hours were utilized by the fifty or more department managers of the store in showing and discussing the salient points of their merchandise acquired for the anniversary sale. There were many “Ohs” and “Ahs” of delight from the assembled co-workers as the various specials were brought to the foreground and enthusiastically displayed. Revelations of such excellent quality at such very low prices proved nothing short of remarkable and the employes were strongly impressed with the excellent values which the present generation may never see again. All the extensive buying machinery of the Pettis’ store was brought into play to acquire these treasures for the approaching Sales event.—Adv.
