BRANDS CHURCH UNFIT PLACE TO REAR CHILDREN Judge Preaches Sermon to Alleged Gun-Carrying Spiritualist Pastor. “Your church is not a fit place lor your own children!” An alleged gun-toting preacher on trial in juvenile court today heard a judge assail him in this manner. Facing child neglect charges, Herbert Shambaugh, 31, of 732 East St. "tlair street, pastor of the Golden Rule Spiritualist church, listened passively to the sermon from the court. Judge John E. Geckler branded Shambaugh’s church, which happens to be his own nine-room home, as an "unfit place for rearing your four children.” Members of the church and family related a series of events by which the minister’s untiring labor as a medium has proved a stumbling block with his wife, Bertha, from whom he has been separated two months. Charges Gun Carrying One member of the church testified the pastor carried a gun and threatened his wife. Alfred Pielman of 132 North New Jersey street, an official of the church, charged “the pastor made love to girls in his church.” Shambaugh holds all services in his home, according to testimony, and was arrested Saturday night at his church. Alleged attempts to free several women from their husband’s influence by communicating with the spirit world did not please the pastor’s wife, mother of six children. She testified her husband stayed jin a darkened room all night writhing a letter to the spirits. Wife Tells of Girl Friend “He told me that be would give up his church, his family and everything for Bernice, his girl friend,” the wife told the court, describing their nine years of married life. When one sister interposed that “We have a Christian home and will care for our pastor’s children,” the judge decreed: “I’m not so much interested in W’hether you have a Christian home or not—what I want for these children is a moral home.” The court issued an interlocutory order, giving the wife custody of the four children, Charles, 6; Paul, 4; Ruth, 3, and Robert, 1, and continued the pastor’s case until Oct. 7.

CLOTHING LINES' TREND UPWARD Goods Shortage Predicted; Textile Industry Gains. By United Press PHILADELPHIA, Sept. 29.—A shortage of merchandise in the clothing industry was predicted today by Henry J. Ettleson, president of the Philadelphia Clothing Manufacturers’ Association. With shipments for August more than 10 per cent greater than for August, 1930, Ettelson said that every shop in the city is operating at full capacity. Retail prices of suits are running from S2O to $39.50 now, considerably lower than within the past ten years. "The clothing industry, however, has had little of the general depression because we lowered the profit margin and have been able to maintain our general production at the same keel, while other businesses have been forced to curtail their production,” he said. And in addition to the excellent condition felt by the clothing industry. the general textile industry is feeling a steady movement upward. according to Allen R. Mitchell Jr., president of the Philadelphia Textile Manufacturers’ Association. GIVES PINT OF BLOOD Patrolman is Donor in Transfusion for Mrs. Ira M. Holmes. A pint of blood was given by Patrolman Robert Murnan in a transfusion at the Methodist hospital Monday for benefit of Mrs. Ira M. Holmes, of 3306 Ruckle street, wife of the attorney, who is in a critical condition. She has been ill two weeks and was admitted to the hospital Friday. Six policemen volunteered in a call for blood donors.
