RESCUED FLIERS ARRIVE IN U. $., WILL TRY AGAIN 0-Day Exposure in Sea Tells on Airmen; Two Are 111. B'i United Press NEW YORK, Sept. 25.—Willy Rody, Christian Johanssen and Ferdinando Da Costa, European airmen, rescued after clinging to their airplane for six days in desolate seas off the Newfoundland coast, arrived in New York today •till suffering from their experiences. "Nevertheless, we will try a transAtlantic flight again next spring," Rody insisted from his berth i>the steamer Stavangerf jord, which brought them to the port they had expected to reach by air. Rody’s feet were badly swollen from constant immersion in salt water for six days, and he had to be carried ashore. Johansseh appeared to be in fairly good condition, but Veiga’s leg, painfully injured while the three were afloat, still troubled him, and he was unable to leave his cabin when the Btavangerfjord docked. Describes Flight Johanssen, who speaks excellent English, explained why they changed their course after passing the Azores on their flight from Portugal. "We had intended to take the southern route," he said, “but we discovered our gasoline consumption was too high, so we decided to try to hit the northern route. "After we passed the Pennland (about 400 miles off Halifax) we checked again on gasoline and thought we had enough to make land, at least, which then was only ninety miles away. We had seventeen tanks of gasoline and some of these contained less than we figured. "We used every drop of fuel in those last hours, and finally were forced to drop down to sea. Weak on Last Day "Our rations consisted of about ten ounces of chocolate and two gallons of water. "The water we apportioned out to allow ourselves a wine glass of it each day. When we were picked up, we had about two wine glasses left, and it was full of oil and dirt, for we had drained it out of the engine cooling system. "All of us were very weak that last day, but I believe we could have held out two or three days more." • The three men were met at quarantine by German, Norwegian and Portuguese consuls. WARNS BUSINESS FIRMS OF DIRECTORY ‘ERROR’ Odd Fellows Not Behind Advertising Book, Secretary Asserts. Business firms of Indianapolis and Indiana were warned today that the grand lodge of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows is not publishing a lodge directory. Contracts, issued under the name of the grand lodge, for advertising space are not authorized, H. E. Roesener, assistant grand secretary, declared. Roesener stated that H. C. Rockwood, grand master, wrote a letter of introduction for a man who intends to publish a lodge directory. This however, merely was to introduce the directory promoter to the various lodges. Although Rockwood furnished a list of members for the directory, it was not intended that it should be used for the purpose of solicitation, it was stated. Space buyers in the directory are not contracting with the grand lodge, Roesener reiterated. Pastor Cuts Own Pay Bn United Press ALDA, Neb., Sept. 25.—Because of the financial strain on his church members, he said, the Rev. F. A. Shawkey of the Methodist church here voluntarily cut his salary from $1,200 to S9OO for the coming year.
