BY BEN STERN. Well Senator Earl Rowley of Laporte “told them all off” when he rose to make “a few remarks’’ at the Laporte and Starke counties Republican rally Sunday. Five thousand heard “Roughouse” Earl say what he thought about Lieutenant-Governor Ed Bush of Salem, blaming the legislature for failure to pass remedial tax legislation, and L. O. Chasey's charges of drunkenness in the last session of the general assembly. And to let everyc"- know that despite these attacks on two Republicans that he is still a good member of that party, Rowley fired a fusillade at Walter Myers, Democratic speaker of the house during the last session. He put the blame for the failure to pass tax relief measures directly upon the Lieutenant-Governor. u u n “Bush could have seen to it that better legislation was enacted,” he declared. “He has aspirations to be Indiana's next Governor, but I am certain that the next Governor will not come from the “Bush League of Salem,” he said referring to Bush’c home town of Salem. Rowley has not been'strong for Bush since early in the last session when the Lieutenant-Governor threw the influence of the patronage which he controlled into the balance to elect Senator Lee Hartzell of Ft. Wayne, as president pro tern, of the senate, thus defeating Senator Jim Nejdl, who the Laporte man supported. So Earl was glad to have an opportunity to even scores. "Chasey’s charges of drunkenness was small and not consistent with the truth,” Rowley -said. ft St St ‘ While Myers, whose scribbling all over the income tax bill was a despicable act for a state official, may seek the United States senatorship, the next senator will be of higher caliber.” Harboring ambitions to be the Republican nominee for LieutenantGovernor, Rowley advanced his own tax relief plan. “The best way to reduce taxes is to reduce expenses and the best expenses to cut are road construction expenditures,” he declared. Andrew J. Hickey, former representative in congress from the old Thirteenth, whose entire public career has exemplified by lack of any "ability at statecraft, added his bit to the speechmaking with the prediction that “the same leadership which brought this country to the heights of prosperity in 1929 will bring it out of the present depression.” Even the stalwart Republicans, who are trying to hold onto their own county jobs, laughed, at this. i = Transportation IF YOU—Are driving somewhere and wish congenial guests to share expense, call Auto Travel Bureau.
