HORROR BEYOND IMAGINATION IN STRICKEN CITY Aviation Chief Tells Story of Conditions in Torn City of Belize. />’,'/ United Press MIAMI, Fla., Sept. 14.—An eye witness accourj. of the havoc wrought by the hurricane which almost obliterated Beltee, capital of British Honduras, was given today by William D. Pawley, president of the Curtiss Cuban Aviation Company. ‘ Damage and death tolls are almost incredible,” Pawley said. He arrived by plane Sunday night with pictures of the stricken city. “Almost nothing is left standing except a few houses, which seemed miraculously to escape. By some freak, whole blocks were razed except isolated structures. “Reports of the numbers killed are not exaggerated, but it will be extremely difficult to compute the actual number of killed for some time, as many drowned bodies have not been recovered. By last night 650 bodies had been buried and huge funeral pyres were burning as we left. “The tidal wave which accompanied the storm completed the destruction of the city. Every water craft anchored off Belize was blown on short. One barge, weighing several tons, was catapualted several miles inland. Streets are strewn with debris. “Tottering walls of an unroofed structure indicate the spot where the Belize customs house once stood.” A special pass, issued by a customs officer, was exhibited by Pawley. The pass was a scrap of paper, torn from a child’s school textbook, with a scribbled notation that Pawley should be permitted movement in the city. Pawley estimated 2,000 injured, in addition to the dead, which unofficial estimates placed at 1,500 to 2,000.
PRIZE STEERS DRAW ATTENTION AT FAIR Local Man Enters 20 Head of First Class Cattle. One load of cattle that caused much attention at the Indiana state fair last week, consists of twenty head of Highland Hereford yearling steers fed by Luther Winkler & Sons of Newman, 111. They were entered in the fair by Cris C. Nave of Indianapolis. The steers averaging 1,016 pounds each, were purchased by the Indianapolis Abattoir Corporation at $10.70 per 100 pounds. The herd had been on feed of yellow corn and commercial food for a period of eleven months, showing an average gain of 680 pounds during that time, according to Winkler. The cattle dressed 65.4 per cent, while this is a very high figure and unexpected, many confident judges and excellent cattle buyers said “that load of steers is the best ever exhibited at the fair.” FILE IN FORECLOSURE Bank Institute Cross-Complaint in Traction Case. Requests for weed cutting made by R. M. F. Hi B. and Mrs. M. have been referred to the health department which reports weed cutting orders were issued to owners in each case. The street department has ended its annual weed campaign and the only remedy now is for the health department to issue an order for cutting of weeds creating an unhealthy condition. * Mr. Fixit—We would like to have some cinders for the alley east of the 1000 North Haugh street as it is very muddy. A A., C. M., H. H., and D. C. Cinder* for this alley have been promised bv Street Commissioner W. H. Winship. Mr. Fixit —There are a number of mudholes in the first alley east of Belmont avenue in the 1400 block south. Please get us some cinders. A. B. Efforts to remedy this condition at once will be made by Street Commissioner W. If. Winship. Mr. Fixit—A danger sign of some sort is needed in front of our house. Quite often cars pass through our yard making turns and our children and others playing in the front yard often are in danger. The house is located at Drexel and Sixteenth street. MRS. H. S. Your request ha* been referred to Police Chief Michael Morrissey for investigation. Mr. Fixit —There are two bad holes in Thirtieth street between Hillside and Orchard which are dangerous and should be repaired. B. B. Street Commissioner Wilbur Winship promised to investigate this complaint and remedy it if possible. Mr. Fixit—There is a very large hole in the street in front of my home at 239 North State avenue. Please see if it can be repaired. I. A. A. City Engineer A. H. Moore has ordered Investigation of this complaint. Mr. Fixit—Meet “cockeyed” alley, located in the rear of west side of Harding street between Twentysecond and Pruitt streets. This “cockeyed” condition easily could be straightened by a little grader work and would relieve the worst eyesore in the beautiful Riverside park district. MACK. Street Commissioner W. H. Winship advises that he does not have a grader small enough for alleys, but will attempt to place the alley in satisfactory condition.
