LEAGUE OPENS PARLEY; SCANS POWERS' ARMS Economic Matters Also Ranks as Headline Topic for Delegates. BY HENRY WOOD United Press Staff Correspondent GENEVA, Sept. 7.—The twelfth assembly of the League of Nations convener! here today for a month’s session. With both the leagua council and Briand’s European economic union commission in session, the league expects to stage one of the busiest scenes of international activities it has held yet. The combined meetings of the assembly, the council, and the European economic union have brought together one of the largest international representations the league has witnessed. Besides delegations from virtually all of the league's fifty-five members, there also were present delegations from two of the principal non-members, Soviet Russia and Turkey, who will participate in the economic discussions of the European union commission. U. S. Envoys Watch The United States, while in no way represented, either officially or nrinofficlally, also had present many officials both from the Geneva consulate and the Berne legation as privatt observers. The utmost importance is attached to the present assembly for the reason that the two dominating questions will be disarmament and economic restoration, both of which have been linked together since President Herbert Hoover’s original suggestion of a reparations and war debt holiday. A general discussion of disarmament was started. The question of the financial and economic restoration of Central Europe will be conducted largely In private negotiations between the leading European statesmen who are attending the conference. / The official agenda of the assembly comprises some twenty-five different questions covering the whole range of the league’s activities. Women’s Rights Studied Early in the session three new members will be elected to the league council to fill the seats now held by Spain, Persia and Venezula. It is expected that the league will be able to open for signature during the course of the assembly Its latest draft convention for strengthening means to prevent war. A final solution for harmonizing the convenant with the Kejlog pact also will be undertaken. One question of particular interest to the women of the entire world is that of the league’s efforts to secure uniform legislation in all countries relative to the nationality of women married to foreigners. A commission representing eight pf the leading international women’s organizations of the world has asked that whatever this solution may be that it be on a basis of absolute equality. BY BEN STERN \ REAL test of Paul V. McNutt strength may be afforded Sept. 15, when Lee Bays, old Second district chairman, holds his new Seventh district Democratic picnic at Linton, The Seventh is McNutt’s home bailiwick, but all reports from that area declare that the regular organization is ’’agin” him. This is predicated on the fact that Bay ran against R. Earl Peters for the state chairmanship last year and was beaten by but one-half vote. Anti-McNutt men, thinking that this may be rankling Bays, and assuming that the close association of Peters with McNutt will turn the former against the aspirant for Governor, have been making overtures to Bays. It is also an open secret that Jap Jones of Martinsville, Morgan county Democratic leader and thrice nominee for state treasurer, is opposing McNutt. His friends claim that the Indiana law school dean double-crossed Jap in the 1930 convention, when he was again seeking the treasureship. Whether this be true, there can be no doubt as to Jones’ opposition. tt tt u The Martinsville man carries much strength in the new Seventh district, which normally should be good for at least a 2,500 majority. It does not look well for a candidate to come into a convention with his own county and district divided and McNutt, say political observers, either should seek to make peace with Bays and Jones, or see that they do not control. That’s common sense politics, they say. It may be that when McNutt comes to the Linton picnic he will make the necessary overtures, or that the welcome accorded him will be so'Overwhelming that the opposition leaders will find it best to make their peace with him. Let us suppose that McNutt is nominated and elected. He will then be the fountain of patronage and district and county chairmen who oppose him will be on the outside looking in. The Linton picnic should tell the story.
ILLNESS FATAL TO CITYJIOMAN Designer of Foch Medallion Succumbs to T. B.’ Funeral services for Mrs. Grace Anna Noblitt, 39, of 1364 North Delaware street, who designed and engraved the medallion presented to Marshal Foch on his visit here ten years ago, were to be held today at 2 p. m. at the Flanner & Buchanan mortuary, with burial in Crown Hill cemetery. Tuberculosis was the cause of the death. At the time of visit of the famous French soldier Mrs. Noblitt, who has studied engraving and jewelry design, was employed by the C. B. Dyer jewelry store, which was employed to make the medallion. Others struck from the same design were presented to the state Governors attending the annual conference at French Lick this year. Mrs. Noblitt was born in Columbus, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles 8011. Following her marriage to William F. Noblitt, an employe of the Indianapolis Union railroad, in 1913, they moved here. Both Mr. and Mrs. Noblitt attended the Bradley Polytechnical institute at Peoria, HI., where they studied jewelry design. Wolf, $75-a-week head of the coupon department in the country’s fourth largest bank, would total nearer $4,000,000 than the preliminary estimate of $1,500,000, it was believed today as bank and insurance company officials delved into Wolf’s accounts. Auditors and attorneys for the Continental-Illinois Bank and Trust Company, who are checking on the fifteen years of alleged defalcations of the church usher and bank employe, said their figures showed Wolf had used nearly $4,000,000 of the bank’s securities in his speculations in stocks and bonds. The attorneys said Wolf would be turned over to State’s Attorney Swanson today for prosecution.
