BRITAIN'S TRADE SLUMP ALARMS ALL W EUROPF Statesmen Share View That England’s Real Crisis Just Is Beginning. BY WILLIAM PHILIP SIMS t'nited Pres* Financial Editor WASHINGTON, Sept. s.—“ The real crisis in England has not yet begun!” * Bitter and angry, “Emperor” Cook leader of the British mine workers, shouted this in his raging denunciation of Premier MacDonald, labor head of the present temporary coalition government of Great Britain. So, too, agrees practically all Europe. In Europe, I encountered hardly a diplomat, statesman or disinterested observer who did not fchare “Emperor” Cook's alarm. Premier Ramsay MacDonald, by word and action, has warned that the present crisis is only a part of a far vaster and more perilous general situation. And the $400,000,000 Franco-American credit, the $600,000,000 wage and unemployment insurance cuts and other moves to balance the budget and save the pound sterling from collapse, he quite frankly admits are emergency measures only. When a patient is very ill and has an acute attack of appendicitis on top of his other ailments, he says in effect, the thing to do is to operate first and prescribe for the rest afterward. “Disease” Deep-Seated England’s disease is deep-seated. The world has moved on and she has not. England is like the buggywhip manufacturer who refused to switch over to spark plugs when the horseless carriage came in. The world which made England immensely rich by buying her products, is no longer buying such products from her, but is making them for itself, and she has found no substitute. British trade fell off $1,670,000 in 1930. This year the slump will be much worse. Her coal, iron, steel and textile exports are way down, and British shipping is, up against a grave crisis. Ships under construction the first half of this year total less than half the figures for the corresponding period of last year. And these things are Britain’s life. Millions Count on Mines The worst part of it is that it is not true—what British politicians keep repeating—that the. world economic crises are all that is the matter with Britain and that she will recover when the world recovers. Britain used to manufacture for the world. Now she is surrounded by competitors. British ships used to haul the world’s merchandise. But there again Britain is up against it—Germany, Holland, France, Italy, Japan and the United States all being rivals with big and growing fleets. Coal—Britain’s ancient standby- - used to make the world’s wheels go round. Today it is oil and electritfty and gasoline. Probably a million people in Britain are still counting on coal to feed them, yet none will ever again get their living by it. Britain faces the colossal task of switching her entire point of view, and, to a large extent, her very mode of life, if she is to survive as the great power she was up to 1914. TROOPS CALLED OUT Mexican Soldiers Ordered to Protect Chinese in Sonora State. HERMOSILLO, Sonora, Mexico, Sept. s.—Mexican troops protected Chinese merchants against expulsion today under terms of a temporary agreement halting an antiChinese campaign in the state of Sonora. Governor Rodolfo Elias Calles announced that troops would be ordered to protect Chinese in all cities where racial feeling has been high. It was estimated that approximately one-third of the 3,000 Chinese in Sonora already had left the state.

Mounted now in the control tower of the administration building at municipal airport, the powerful BBT floorlight illuminates the big city field for night flying, rain or shine, as this remarkable picture shows. The photograph was made during a rainstorm at the airport, and shows the big light pouring a white beam over the field for stray pilots that might have dared the storm or might have been forced to fight their way back to the municipal field when surrounded by the storm area.
NEW DIABETES DIET ELIMINATES FATS
Sugar and Starches Safely Fed to Patients, Says Montreal Doctor. BUFFALO, N. Y., Sept. s.—Diabetic patients can safely bs given sugar and starchy foods to eat, if fats are carefully eliminated from their diet. This method of handling diabetes cases, unorthodox according to prevailing medical views, has been successfully used by Dr. I. M. Rabinowtich of Montreal General hospital, who spoke before the American Chemical Society’s meeting here today. His paper was part of a symposium on “some clinical aspects of endocrine therapy.” There is no cure for diabetes, in the real sense of the world, Dr. Rabinowitch emphasized. All that modern methods of treatment do is arrest the disease and prolong the patient’s life, sometimes for many JIMMY IS DECORATED Mayor Walker Made Chevalier in France’s Legion of Honor. £;/ United Press PARIS, Sept. s.—Mayor James J. years. Even since the discovery of insulin, it has been found that a properly adjusted diet alone is sufficient in the majority of cases. In the cases treated by Dr. Rabinowitch, the patients were allowed sugars and starches enough to satisfy their energy requirements, but only enough, and insulin injections were given only when specially needed, and then often in reduced dosages.

STOLE TO EAT i BAKER SHOWS YOUTH MERCY Frees Orphan, 16, and Gives Him Ail Change He Has in Pockets. “Yes, sir, I’m awful thankful—that judge sure is a fine fellow!” In this boyish fashion, a 16-year-old orphan boy, who was tempted and stole, walked from the Marion criminal court today, acclaiming that all Hoo6ier justice is not gone. Just two months ago 13-year-old John Tooley, Princeton, could not have breathed words like these—when he was “exiled” by a Gibson county judge for stealing $2 worth of blacksmith’s tools. Today, Richard Harris, of 1708 Blaine avenue, was spared a prison sentence by a judge who gave him 95 cents for food and decreed — “Richard, my son, you’re free. Go make a man of yourself.” Says Hunger Drove Him “Hunger drove me to breaking into a confectionary, Judge, your honor,” Richard confessed, tears in his blue eyes. This admission led Judge Frank P. Baker to weave, piece by piece, the sorrowful story of Richard’s life, by questioning the lad. This unusual story merited sympathy by its own facts. The judge thought so and gave his youthful prisoner all the pocket change he had. This is Richard’s story: “My mother died when I was 4;

Is It a Game ? By United Press WASHINGTON, Sept. 5. “Rain checks,” commonly used at ball games, have found their way into movie theaters. The audience at one of the capital’s largest film houses sat waiting patiently while operators struggled to repair machines that had gone “dead” in the middle of the feature presentation. The characters on the screen talked, but not a word came out. After a time the management announced that “rain checks,” good on any future date, might be obtained at the box office. The show, for the evening, definitely was over.

I was alone In the world . . . with only our home, which father had owned. “I rented part of the house for $7 a month and lived on that rent until a few months ago. The Rent Stopped “The depression came, the rent stopped and I faced hunger ... I didn’t want to beg . . . the confectionary seemed an easy way and I stole food.” Judge Baker said: “Now, Richard, come back and see me in a few days —our court charity fund may have some more money for you.” Meanwhile, the judge is writing Miss Hannah Noone, township trustee, a letter to obtain further help for the boy. And reporters, court attaches and others who were in court this morning are hoping that—- “ Never again will Richard steal because he is hungry.”

which he helps fix as board member. Wilson announced he would make a detailed study of the case, to determine whether criminal action will be taken against George Herr, the advisory board member. Disclosure that Herr, a Castleton grocer, has been providing all relief supplies for the poor of that town has aroused much commment at the courthouse. Henry T. Van ©leave, township trustee, declared today that Herr had told him he had not been connected with the store for the last two years. Van Cleave expected to confer with Prosecutor Wilson and the state board of accounts in connection with the case today. The trustee offered the contract Thursday to Thomas Heims and

other Castleton grocers, Van Cleave said. A statement by Van Cleave, following the disclsoure, “that other grocers had refused the contract, and he had given it to Herr,” was refuted by three grocers. Van Cleave did not indicate whether he would remove J. T. Plummer, a Lawrence grocer, and brother of Carl Plummer, advisory board member, from providing relief supplies. Wilson said he would investigate and “if facts warrant prosecution, they would be turned over to the Marion county grand jury.” Homecoming Starts By Times Special REDKEY Ind., Sept. 5.—A twoday homecoming celebration opened today at the Power Station baseball park.
