POSTAL SAVINGS DEPOSITS MORE THAN DOUBLED Confidence in U. S. Stability Is Shown, Says Chief of Bureau. By United Pre WASHINGTON, Sept. 4—Postal Ravings deposits nave more than doubled in the last year. William T. S. Rollins, director of this division of the post office department, said today the increased deposits had been caused by confidence in government stability in a period of financial insecurity. At the close of business July 31, last, postal savings deposits, which pay an interest return of only 2 per cent, totalled $370,000,000. In June, 1930, the deposits amounted to $175,000,000 and in 1929 they totalled $153,644,529. Money deposited with the post office is placed by the government in local banks throughout the country. The government obtains an interest return of 2Vi per cent, the extra one-half of one per cent being used to cover expenses incurred in handling the money. “The timidity of the people in the face of numerous bank failures has caused them to transfer their money in larger amounts to postal savings,” Rolins said. “They have confidence that, although they get a smaller rate of interest, they will not lose their money if it is deposited with the government.” Wife Murder Charged EVANSVILLE, Ind., Sept. 4.—lra Turpen, 42, is held on a murder charge today following dying statements of his wife, Maude, 29, that he poisoned her.
