TINY PLANE IS SENSATION OF THOMPSON RAGE Amazingly Small Ship Has Wing Area of Only 40 Square Feet. by Hcrippt-Houtard ~S e.VDtpapcr Alliance CLEVELAND, Sept. 4.—Each year among the 500 or 600 airplanes at the national air races there is always one outstanding plane, one that is head and shoulders above the rest in beauty, streamline and speed. Two years ago at Cleveland the ship was the little Travel Air mystery plane, with which Doug Davis of Atlanta won the free-for-all race. Last year at Chicago the hit of the show was the little white homemade plane of Benny Howard, St. Louis mail pilot. And this year the outstanding ship is a tiny little watch charm of a plane that hasn’t even been seen on the race field yet. It is expected by many to win the big Thompson race next Monday. It is a specially built, Menascomotored racer, constructed in San Francisco, shipped here by train, and set up ac the Great Lakes field, on the far side of Cleveland. Its smallness is amazing. It has a wing area of only 40 square feet. Its air-cooled, in-line motor is 275-horse power. Its fuselage is aluminum. Its landing gear folds up into the tiny wing in flight. The whole ship is silver colored. In the big race that day it will be flown by Ray Moore, hard-flying California pilot. The plane is expected to do better than 300 miles an hour. Among the national air fans, thoughts are on the Thompson race. Six planes are definitely entered, and it is possible one or two latecomers will start, although they are not expected to be important. In addition to the spectacular Mcnasco, the entrants are: Jimmy Doolittle, Laird special; Jimmy Wedell, flying a small midwing monoplane; Lowell Bayles, in a special Gee Bee low-wing monoplane; Walter Hunter, mail pilot between St. Louis and Omaha, who will fly the Travel Air mystery ship which Doug Davis used two years ago and Lou Reichers, in a Lockheed Altair. T DISCUSSION SET Five Talks Scheduled for Wednesday Night. Five talks on varied subjects are scheduled to be given at Wednesday night meetings of the Young Men’s Club of the Y. M. C. A. Half-hour discussions will follow the addresses. Dr. David M. Edwards, executive secretary of the Indiana council of International Relations, will speak the night of Sept. 9, on "Observations in Russia—ls She a Menace to World Peace?” Dr. Edwards spent two years in Europe prior to taking up his duties in Indianapolis. On Sept. 16, the Rev. R. M. Dodrill, pastor of College Avenue Baptist church, will speak on "Experiences in the Holy Land.” Speakers scheduled for the latter part of the month are: The Rev. J. F. Ferguson, Irvington Presbyterian church, “Arguments for and ‘Against Birth Control,” Sept. 23; Fermor S. Cannon, president of the Railroad Men’s Building and Savings Association, "Building a Home,” Sept. 30; v "Policing the Upper World and the Underworld,” Police Chief Michael F. Morrissey, Oct. 1. RAIL POST VOTE IS DUE I.ogansport Man Slated to Get State Inspector Job. The post pays $4,000 and was left vacant by the death of William O. Holmes. J. K. Smith, veteran assistant in the department, was an aspirant for the position and the new appointment is expected to be made on a divided vote. OIL FIELD WILL OPEN East Texas Wells to Produce 225 Barrels a Day. KILGORE. Tex., Sept. 4.—'Tile East Texas flush oil field will open at 7 a. m. Saturday for production on a basis of 225 barrels a well daily, it was announced here today. Sept. 4.—ltaly and France today requested a six months postponement of the Schneider cup seaplane races, stating that otherwise they would be unable to participate. The races are scheduled to be held this month. French and Italian participation has been indefinite although both nations have had pilots in training. His "Overtime” Costs Him Wife Bp United t\ess CHICAGO, Sept. 4.—Every night ror a year, Gecrz? °%born arrived home late and told his wife he had to work overtime, she testified in asking for a divorce. She got suspicious, she said, because despite all the overtime, Osborn never brought home any extra pay. She got the divorce on testimony that Osborn really spent his evenings with other women. Indiana’s Navy Is Praised High praise for the morale and appearance of the Indiana naval militia was expressed to Governor Harry G. Leslie today in a letter from Governor George White of Ohio. The Indiana sailors appeared recently at the dedication of the Perry memorial at Put-in-Bay, £>bio.

By United Press CHICAGO. Sept. 4—The Kelleys from Ireland and the bulldogs from anywhere long have been famed in fiction for their fighting ability. But the fighting ability of Mrs. Anna Kelley and her bulldog, Queenie, wasn’t fiction. Two wouldbe robbers found that out. The robbers tried to hold up Mrs. Kelley at her rooming house. She fought back. Queenie jumped into the fight without an invitation. He took a bite at one of the robbers, missed, and bit Mrs. Kelley instead. Mrs. Kelley then bit one of the bandits. The would-be robbers escaped. but if police see them, they won’t be hard to recognize, because, between Mrs. Kelley and Queenie. both men were chewed rather badly.
STORM TARGES FLIERS DOWN Landing in Field Reported to Police as Crash. Fearful that a huge transcontinental plane had crashed with its cargo of passengers, police and deputy sheriffs sped to State and Troy avenues Thursday night only to find that two young fliers had set their light airplane down in a field to escape the storm. William Wehking Jr. of St. Louis, and Harry Rein, St. Louis, were en route to the national air races at Cleveland, and reached Lima, 0., when they decided to return to municipal airport here because of weather conditions in Ohio. South of the city they were caught in the storm and forced down. A neighbehood resident saw them drop into the field, and phoned a report of a crash. A few minutes before, the east-bound Transcontinental plane had left municipal airport and was flying fast ahead of the storm. Wehking and Rein said they saw it several miles in advance of the wind and rain. REVEALS RARE DISEASE CURB Mayo Expert Says Addison Treatment Effective. By Unit' and Brest BUFFALO, N. Y., Sept. 4.—Addison’s disease, almost invariably ending in death, can be treated effectively in more than 90 per cent of the cases, Dr. L. G. Rowntree of the Mayo clinic told the American Chemical Society. "The new treatment evolved by several research workers almost simultaneously hsa been tried on twenty-six patients suffering from Addison's disease,” Dr. Rowntree said, "and in only one instance did the treatment fail to save the patient’s life.” Addison’s disease, Dr. Rowntree explained, usually is caused by tuberculosis. The tuberculosis destroys the outer cover of the adrenal gland. This prevents secretion of cartin, a substance necessary to life, and controlling pigmentation. ‘‘The new method of treatment is not a cure,” Dr. Rowntree said, "but, like insulin in diabetes, will allow the patient to live indefinitely. As soon as treatment is stopped, the disease returns in full force.” CHILE WINS TRUCE Agreement Is Reached With Mutinous Sailors. SANTIAGO, Chile, Sept. 4.—Reports of agreement "in principle” with mutinous sailors controlling the entire Chilean navy were heard today while the province remained under a state of siege. Censorship was maintained and warnings against Communistic control of the government were issued. Terms of the agreement were not made public. Negotiations were conducted between the mutineers’ committee and Rear Admiral Eduardo von Schroder aboard the battleship La Torre at Coquimbo. The government declared a state of siege (martial law) in the province of Santiago and was prepared to extend it to other parts of the country. Crowds were prohibited from gathering in the streets after 9 p. m. Strict censorship on newspapers and telegraphic and cable transmission of dispatches was established throughout the republic.
