Kitchen Has Full Set of Beautifiers BY ALICE HART Every woman knows the appeal of the department store beauty counters with their graceful bottles, boxes in delicate pastel wrappings, irresistible perfumes tempting the purchaser. Has it occurred to you that in your own home —on the shelves of your own kitchen, in fact—you have a cosmetic supply that for practical results rivals the expensively packaged offerings of stores and beauty parlors? A little thought on the subject will convince you that you can cut corners on your beauty budget without sacrifice to your personal attractiveness. Everyone has these “kitchen cosmetics” at hand. Many of them form important ingredients in commercial products sold at high prices. Here’s a Few Tins Here are a few of the beautifiers to be found on most kitchen shelves: Lemons (for lemon juice), olive oil, milk, honey, cucumbers (for cucumber juice), buttermilk, vinegar, bran, oatmeal, table salt, eggs, borax, ice and cornmeal. Os course, you have them! Every one does. And to gain the benefits of these simple beautifiers it is not necessary to compound complicated mixtures, requiring time and patience. Most of them may be used just as they come from the kitchen containers. If you will keep a supply of table salt convenient in the bathroom the morning shower or cold bath can be made twice as invigorating. Rub Salt Over Body Rub the dry salt over the body before stepping under the shower. You will find this gives the skin a tingling, exhilarating sensation. A handful of borax tossed into the tub will soften hard water. Common baking soda, used the same why, makes the bath restful and relaxing. You can soften water to use on your face by boiling one pound of bran in a gallon of water for half an hour. Strain this bran water and add enough to a basin of tepid water to make it look milky. The bran water has several cosmetic properties. MATCH VELVETEEN WITH WOOL SKIRT If you have a job that requires you to sit too much to make a daytime velveteen dress practical, don’t think you have to pass up the fashion for velveteen entirely. Combine a velveteen jacket with a wool skirt of matching or contrasting color. WAFFLE HATS ON MENU FOR AUTUMN Waffles are on the fashion menu this fall. There are sports hats of waffle felt and waffle wools for dresses. The hats look as if the felt had been pressed in a tiny waffle iron. In the wool fabric the waffle effect is achieved by the weave. PARIS NOIF USING DEAD-WHITE KID At important social affairs recently held in Paris, dead-white kid made some interesting evening accessories. White kid bags, white kid shoes, white kid cigaret and vanity cases were seen. The kid is soft but highly polished and is frequently decorated with jeweled ornaments. Sorority to Meet Rho Zeta Tau sorority will meet tonight at the home of Miss Dorothy Zorniger, 1363 West Twentyeighth street. A party honoring Miss Helen Park who is visiting in the city, will follow. Tea to Be Given Mr. and Mrs. G. M. Williams will entertain Saturday afternoon with a tea at their home on Cold Springs road, in honor of Mrs. Donald McLeod who will leave soon for permanent residence in Philadelphia.

AH, ROASTING EARS! THAT’S LIL DAGOVER

German Actress ‘Conquers’ City After Arrival • in Plane. BY WALTER D. HICKMAN “American farm life is pretty near heaven.” That’s the idea of Lil Dagover, German stage and movie star, who is rubbing elbows with Hoosiers today. After conquering Indianapolis, she left for Linton, Ind., where she placed a marker on the spot marking the center of population. Before reaching Indianapolis, Miss Dagover had to conquer rain and storm. Her plane was forced down Thursday night on an emergency landing field near Shelbyville, Iftd. Seated in an old-fashioned armchair, the German star was rocking contentedly in a farm house near the landing field when I arrived with a rescue party from the Indiana theater. American Farm “Heaven’’ She looked longingly at a pile of Indiana roasting ears as she talked about her work to the lady of the farmhouse. “Oh, this life,” she said extending her hands, “This life on the farm. So peaceful. So far away from the noise of city life. “I believe that the American farmer is pretty near heaven.” She was told that the farmers near the landing field made their living mostly by raising com and watermelons. “Watermelons,” she said, “That is my weakness. I could eat heaps all the time.” She told me that she had come to America to make pictures for Warner Brothers and First National. Rubs Elbows With All “I really love America,” she said. “And I will have to conquer her or go back to Germany. I want America to love me. “And that is not so hard, because I only ~<igh a hundred pounds.” Probably no foreign actress ever has become acquainted with this country as Lil Dagover is becoming acquainted. She is rubbing elbows with all people and she is making no personal appearances. Calls on Leslie Last night she entertained newspaper men at dinner at the Lincoln hotel. Before departing for Linton, the
